New athletics championship centre

Another significant milestone before the World Championship in Hungary. A brand new running track is now open for the athletes at the National Athletics Centre.

A significant sports event in Hungary’s history will be held in just two months. The Athletics World Championship is held between 19 and 27 of August. As Magyar Építők reported, the racetrack was unveiled on the 26th of April 2023. Later in May, a technical demonstration of the sound and lighting was showcased as well. The inauguration of the world-class track by Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), happened on the 16th of June 2023. This means a new milestone for this international project. The project was realised by ZÁÉV Plc and Magyar Építő Plc.

The National Athletics Centre

The track has nine lanes and a Mondo surface, which makes it extremely fast. The track’s uniqueness lies in its asymmetrical surface, which will allow the spectators to get a better view of both the running and the jumping events. Sebastian Coe is content with the work done. According to him, the builders did an incredible job. Thus the 2000 contestants from 200 different countries will have outstanding performances. The facility was designed for 35 thousand spectators. The stand will be dismantled after Hungary‘s biggest sports event. It will be replaced with a running circle which will be one of the most beautiful ones in all of Europe. Thus, sports lovers and professional athletes can both enjoy the new running circle.

The inauguration

During the inauguration, Sebastian Coe said that athletes are inarguably in good shape and will have amazing achievements. The two-time Olympic champion Coe and the young athletes of Bp. Honvéd and Gödöllői EAC did the honours of running the first-ever circle on the newly opened track.

The Crown of the Queen of Sports

The track was named “The Crown of the Queen of Sports”. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, minister of defence of Hungary, called the new National Athletics Centre a “wonder”. In addition to that, he emphasised that there is a great development in athletics, which is supported by this facility with its innovations. Sebastian Coe highlighted that women’s 10,000m final is taking place on the first day. Hence, spectators can expect an outstanding performance from Sifan Hassan and Letesenbet Gidey on this day. On the second day, spectators can watch the men’s 100m flat final. Later, Coe thanked the Hungarian government and the capital for their support. He also said:

“We hope that very enthusiastic fans will come out to the World Championships to support the athletes. Let’s not forget that five of Hungary’s ten Olympic champions in athletics have won the hammer throw, an event that will also take place at the start of the World Championships.”

PHOTOS: Budapest welcomes a beautiful new park soon

csepel park budapest

Following the World Athletics Championship this year, Budapest’s newest green park will be created on the site of the National Athletics Centre.

The complex, which is being built by ZÁÉV and Magyar Építő, will be transformed after the World Championship, Magyar Építők reports. The temporary stands will be demolished and replaced by a running track, walking path and outdoor gym. In addition, a cycle path to Csepel will be opened as part of the Centre.

Opportunities for the public to play sports

“This world-class facility is being built at the gateway to Csepel, which is much more than a competition centre, it will provide a great opportunity for the residents of the area to relax after the World Championship. We are particularly pleased that the project will also include a cycle path and a new pedestrian bridge along the banks of the Danube to Csepel,”

a statement from the State Secretariat for Sport of the Ministry of Defence quoted Szilárd Németh as saying.

Budapest’s newest green area

The Budapest Athletics World Championships will take place between 19 and 27 August, with the National Athletics Centre north of Csepel as the central venue.

The new pedestrian bridge will allow competitors to cross the bridge on foot or by bicycle during the World Championships. Anyone will be able to cross the bridge on foot or by bicycle after the World Championships. After the Championships, the facility will be redeveloped, with the temporary grandstands being demolished and replaced by a running track, walking path and outdoor gym. The surrounding park will also be opened to the public, creating Budapest’s newest green area.

Áron Szilágyi won gold medal in individual fencing!

Szilágyi Áron gold

Áron Szilágyi defeated his French opponent in a tight final. Thus, the three-time Olympic champion won the first individual world championship gold of his life.

Áron Szilágyi achieved the best individual result of his life by reaching the final. He has previously won gold in the team event, but his best individual result so far was bronze. In the final, he beat Maxime Pianfetti of France in a dramatic battle to win 15-14.

Szilágyi, 32, was up against Hungarian András Szatmári in the last eight. In keeping with tradition, there was no coach on either side, so that the two sides could do it alone.

In the final, at 14-14, there was even a video shoot-out. After the video shoot-out, however, Szilágyi was the winner. So Szilágyi can now claim the World Championship title in addition to his Olympic and European titles, writes 24.hu.

Canadian swimmer says she got drugged at world championships in Budapest

Canadian swimmer Mary-Sophie Harvey shared a rather disturbing post on Instagram on Wednesday. She said that she got drugged on the last night of the FINA Aquatic World Championships in Budapest.

“On the last night of the World Championships, I got drugged.”

In her instagram post, shared by swimswam.com, the swimmer wrote the following:

“On the last night of the World Championships, I got drugged. At the time I wasn’t aware of what got inside of me, I just remember waking up the next morning completely lost; with our team manager and doctor at my bedside. I remember celebrating my competition while also being reasonable and aware of my next objective, which is Commonwealth Games. But then, I don’t remember anything. there’s this four-to-six-hour window where I can’t recall a single thing. I’ve heard bits and pieces by people and I’ve experienced judgement too. The only thing I can say is this: I’ve never felt more ashamed.”

She had to go to the hospital

The next day, she was having dinner with her family, when she felt that something was not okay. “I ended up going to the hospital, where I was met with doctors & psychologists,” she continues. Although she had a rib sprain and a small concussion, she got lucky. According to her doctors, these kind of incidents happen quite often and it could have been worse.

Still under the shock of getting drugged

Unfortunately, a lot more people are affected by getting drugged than one would think. That is why the swimmer wrote a warning, too. “To anyone reading this, please be careful. I thought I was safe, that it would never happen to me, especially while being surrounded by friends. But it did…and I wish someone had educated me on the matter prior to that night. … Thank you to the people that helped me while I was vulnerable and for those who’ve reached out since then. I apologize to anyone that has been trying to contact me or see me, but felt something was off. I’m still learning to cope with everything and find myself again. Thank you for understanding.”

Swimming Canada has responded

As blikk.hu reports, Swimming Canada has responded to the incident. “We are aware there was an incident the night before departure from Budapest. As soon as team staff became aware, Mary received excellent medical treatment from our team physician on site, and was cleared to travel home,” they wrote. In addition, they emphasized that the safety and health of their team members is the most important. “Staff have been in contact with Mary since her return and we are offering her support. We continue to gather information on the situation, and the file has been forwarded to our independent Safe Sport officer.”

Aquatics – FINA head thanks Orbán for successful world championships

President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Husain Al-Musallam

Husain Al-Musallam, the president of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), has sent a letter to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, thanking him for the successful organisation of the 19th FINA World Championships which ended in Budapest on Sunday.

Bertalan Havasi, the prime minister’s press chief, said on Wednesday that Al-Musallam had said it was “an honour to work under your leadership with an excellent team to organise such a unique event. Together, we have conquered all obstacles in less than four months, and organised one of the best aquatics events in FINA’s history”.

The FINA president also thanked Orbán for the talks on the future of Hungarian aquatics, Havasi said. “FINA and Hungary have a marvellous tradition of cooperation, and I am happy to see that you support our work together in the future; we appreciate your commitment to and trust in FINA,” the letter said.

Al-Musallam concluded by saying it had been a joy to share the world championships with “the people of Hungary and thousands of viewers worldwide.” More than 2,000 athletes from 180 countries competed in front of more than 130,000 spectators during the contest which started on June 18.

Hungary stepped in to host the 2022 worlds after Fukuoka, Japan, which was originally to have hosted, rescheduled because of the pandemic. Hungary hosted the FINA worlds in 2017, too, and it will host them again in 2027.

The World Chess Champion Candidates Tournament in Madrid had a break on Saturday and an unscheduled match was arranged. Judit Polgár, the women’s world number one for 25 years, played against reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Polgár retired in August 2014 and is one of the commentators for this tournament.

Polgár and Carlsen, chess legends

Judit Polgár is a Hungarian chess player, international grandmaster, eight-time open chess champion, two-time women’s chess Olympic champion. She has been awarded the Women’s Chess Oscar seven times, including the Oscar for the female chess player of the century.

Polgár posted on her official Facebook page that she ran into Carlsen in Retiro Park, who was playing chess with club members. Since she was also there, they exchanged a game, which Polgár, who was playing with the light pieces, won.

Polgár beat Carlsen

As Telex reports, in a seven-minute commentary available on YouTube, you can see how Polgár made the best chess player of the modern era surrender by taking down his queen. Carlsen saw no point in continuing after 19 moves.

In total, Polgár has beaten eleven men’s world champions in classic or fast games. Between 2006 and 2014, she played 17 games with Carlsen, and she beat him in Mexico in 2012, when she played dark and the game was decided after 50 moves!

The World Chess Champion Candidates Tournament

The tournament continues on Sunday and concludes on Monday, with Hungarian participant Richárd Rapport having won once and lost twice in the 12 rounds so far. Russian Jan Nyepomnyasich is currently leading and is expected to challenge Carlsen, just like he did last year.

“Madrid is brilliant! 😊 I arrived and was immediately in the middle of a magical event,” posted Judit Polgár on Facebook. “The chess club in Retiro Park has a charming building, surrounded by lots of outdoor chess tables, where you can play chess until 2am 🤗 And who was playing there with the locals when I arrived? 📣 World champion Magnus Carlsen! He was amazing, super cool! Could it have been any better? Yes! Magnus and I played a quick game (3-3 minutes) and I won!😊 What a day!❤️”

Alongside the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie (Pastry World Cup) in Lyon, World Chocolate Masters is the world’s most famous confectionery competition, with the finals regularly held in the French capital.

The theme of the competition

As bdpst24.hu wrote, this year’s competition, which is based on the theme of “Tomorrow” (#TMRW _TASTES _LOOKS _FEELS _LIKE), has a strong focus on art, science, technology, and design. Together, these are set to shape the chocolate of the future. Competitors had to present chocolate and cutting-edge confectionery techniques from different perspectives. In the regional round,

Menyhárt had to create a dessert (French pâtisserie), a 100% plant-based snack, a bonbon, and a chocolate sculpture weighing up to 5 kg in just 8.5 hours.

Menyhárt said the following about preparing for the competition and performing in front of strangers:

“It has given me a certain confidence and a sense of calm to have had the opportunity to try out what it’s like to create and perform in front of unknown people in a strange environment. Both the Debic professional presentations and the professional courses I have taken have helped me to prepare for this competition.”

Menyhárt’s history as a pastry chef

According to StoreInsider.hu, from the very beginning, Menyhárt has consciously worked to become a world-class, respected confectioner. His unique French-based style, premium creations, and passion for his craft have earned him many prestigious international accolades throughout his career.

Hungarian talent in Verstappen’s former team!

Révész Levente

Max Verstappen is a Belgian-Dutch racing driver and the winner of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. By winning the championship, he became the first Dutch driver to win the F1 World Championship.

Now, a Hungarian talent, Levente Révész, has joined Van Amersfoort Racing, the F3 team Verstappen was a part of from 2014. The Dutch driver competed in the now-defunct Formula-3 European Championship in 2014 where he went straight to the top.

The European Formula Regional Championship started in 2019, and so far, no one has made it to Formula 1.

This year, Révész was racing in the Italian F4, competing against big names like Sebastian Montoya and Charlie Wurz.

He took part in all 21 races, and his best result was 9th place in Vallelunga, Sweden.

As formulascout.com said, Révész will be competing in the Asian Formula Regional Championship with Evans GP this winter. He had the chance to test with Arden before joining Van Amersfoort Racing where Max Verstappen also raced in F3. The young Hungarian will be partnered with the Dutch Kas Haverkort.

Before 16-year-old Révész switched to single-seat racing cars, he drove go-carts until 2020. Next year, he will start competing as early as January and February when the Asian F3 championship starts.

“I have to improve extremely fast,” said Révész. “I’ve only done one full season in Formula 4, and I need to move on to the next phase. It’s an incredible feeling to drive these cars, which feel so different than the F4 cars,”

said the young Hungarian talent.

USA national handball team to have a Hungarian coach

Edina Szabó

Edina Szabó will be the head coach of the Women’s National Handball Team of the United States.

Even if you are not particularly into sports, you sure have heard about Hungarian successes, let it be football, swimming or handball.

Street named after football legend Puskás opened in Madrid

It is not only Hungarian sportsmen of whom the country can be proud. Many people in the industry have achieved several successes. The latest of them is

handball coach Edina Szabó who will manage the U.S. Women’s National Handball Team until the end of the Paris Olympics in 2024,

announced the American Federation on their website.

The Hungarian coach will first be the consultant to the team’s current head coach Julio Sainz. As index.hu writes, remains the director for the North America and Caribbean Handball Championship and the World Handball Championship in Spain, in case they qualify.

This transitional period gives Edina time to develop a deeper understanding of our program and to learn about the challenges and opportunities associated with USA Team Handball.”, said USA Team Handball Chief Executive Officer Ryan Johnson.

He added that there are lots of unique challenges associated with American handball that are not often understood by those with European experience

Edina has “incredible, world-class playing and coaching experience” paired with “her attitude and approach, and her vulnerability in acknowledging what she hopes to soon learn”,

so there was no question she was the best candidate.

Szabó served as General Manager of the French Women’s National Handball Team for 15 years, after having scored 112 goals in 65 games as a player of the Hungarian Women’s National Team. She has also coached in the top handball league in Hungary since 2003 as head coach of Cornexi Alcoa. Szabó also serves as a Professor of Physical Education at the University of Physical Education in Budapest.

She was extremely happy about the decision.I’m incredibly honoured to be selected for such an important and exciting opportunity, and I cannot wait to continue learning more about all aspects of the American handball community. Especially as we continue to approach the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games…

I am eager to devote my time and energy into contributing to the Women’s National Team’s growth and progress…”,

she said.

‘Zugzwang’: Polish draughts official apologises after removing Russian flag

russian flag

A Polish draughts official apologised on Wednesday for causing outrage in Moscow by removing the Russian flag from a player’s table during a world title match, but said he’d had little choice.

Match official Jacek Pawlicki removed the flag as Russia’s Tamara Tansykkuzhina played Poland’s Natalia Sadowska in the Womens World Championship in Warsaw on Tuesday.

Tansykkuzhina, a six-time world champion, went on to lose what was the latest round of the final. Organisers said they had been told to remove the flag immediately by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because Russians are barred under doping sanctions from competing under their national flag at major international events.

Pawlicki said he had apologised to Tansykkuzhina, but had little option but to remove the flag.

“There’s this position on the board called ‘zugzwang’ which means there’s no good move to make … and that’s what we had yesterday, a zugzwang,” he told Reuters.

“Maybe we should’ve turned off the cameras at that moment. We didn’t think of that. We were really under pressure and we were afraid.” In an emailed statement to Reuters, WADA said it had requested action over the flag on Tuesday after a request earlier in the championship went unheeded.

It added: “WADA did not intend and did not ask for the flags to be removed during a match. The manner in which they were removed is not a question for WADA.” The incident caused outrage on Russian social media at a time of strained relations between Poland and Russia following tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions.

The president of Russia’s Olympic Committee called it a “gross mistake”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blamed the incident for Tansykkuzhina’s loss on Tuesday. Pawlicki said he did not believe his action had affected Tansykkuzhina’s performance. “I’m sure that many Russians are upset and for that I am truly sorry,” he said. “We never had any bad intentions.”

In 2021, several international sports competitions will arrive in Hungary

Hungary football Romania Real Madrid

Next year, a lot of sports events will be organised in Hungary, especially in Budapest. As a result of the coronavirus epidemic, the sports world and the sports calendar have undergone a profound transformation. There were sporting events that took place in other locations, and some would be held later. The largest of the postponed events is the Tokyo Summer Olympics, which will be held in the summer of 2021. This is also important to note because the events of many sports are aligned with the Olympics.

In this article, we have gathered the Hungarian sporting events to be held next year with the help of turizmus.com

The women’s handball Olympic qualifying tournament would have been organised in March this year. At the beginning of the virus situation, the international organisation of the sport, IHF, discussed the postponement in a video conference. The men’s Hungarian national team will definitely not be there in Tokyo; they can fight for a medal at the World Championship in Egypt. The women’s national team will compete for participation in the Olympics between March 19-21, 2021. The fact that the qualifying series is held in Győr, Hungary, may help them achieve their goal. The Olympic qualification is also at stake in the wrestlers’ competition in Budapest in March.

Also in the spring, in April, the Fed Cup final for women’s tennis players will be replaced in Budapest. The new date is April 13-18, 2021. The venue is still the Papp László Sports Arena, where the best women’s teams in the world will play on the slag track.

May will be a crowded month. Budapest will host the European Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Open Water and Diving Championships. Furthermore, Budapest and Papp László Sports Arena is the venue again, this time for the final four of the women’s handball champion’s league. Hopefully, a Hungarian team will be among the top teams.

One of the main sporting events of the year is the European Men’s Football Championship in June and July. It is particularly noteworthy that, for the first time, the organisation of the European Championships will be shared among many cities. In the capital of Hungary, the Puskás Arena in Budapest, three group matches and a game from the Round of 16 will be held. During the group matches, the Hungarian team can be seen twice. Besides, the national team of the reigning European Champion Portugal and reigning World Champion France will be visible as well. Also, the European Championship for those under the age of 21 is partly held in Hungary alongside Slovenia.

In terms of individual sport, the Budapest World Juggling Championship stands out. In June, the Hungarian capital will host the World Equestrian Championships and the European Four-Wheel Drive Championships in September.

Several World Cup competition will take place in Hungary in 2021 in several sports, such as pentathlon in March and kayaking in May. The Gyulai István Memorial Athletics Hungarian Grand Prix will be held again in Székesfehérvár in July, and the Hungarian race will take place in Formula 1 on the first of August.

However, the race calendar for 2021 is far from complete, and due to the coronavirus epidemic, several sports do not yet have the dates and locations of many competitions. It is also questionable where and how many spectators there will be at sporting events.

European Aquatics Championships to be held next May in Budapest

duna aréna sport

The European Aquatics Championships, originally scheduled to be held in Budapest this month, will be organised between May 10 and 23 next year in view of the novel coronavirus epidemic, the European swimming league LEN said on Tuesday.

The organisers announced last week that the event had been postponed to 2021 because of the epidemic.

The championships had already been postponed once, from May to August.

The LEN also announced the cancellation of the current international water polo cup seasons.

FINA announces new dates for Fukuoka World Championships

FINA, the world swimming governing body, announced on Monday that the FINA World Championships, initially scheduled for the summer of 2021 in Fukuoka, Japan, will now take place from May 13-29, 2022.

In a statement, FINA said following consultation with the city of Fukuoka, Japan Swimming Federation, organizers, athletes, coaches, technical committees, TV partners, and sponsors; FINA is pleased to announce the new date of Fukoaka worlds, says Xinhua.

“After liaising with the relevant stakeholders and receiving feedback from them, we do not doubt that the decision taken will provide the best possible conditions for all participants at the Championships. We look forward to witnessing the world’s best aquatic athletes from around the world competing in the city of Fukuoka (JPN) in 2022,” said FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.

“At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, FINA hopes the announcement of these dates will allow for some clarity in planning for all concerned,” Maglione said.

The FINA World Masters Championships will take place across the island of Kyushu, from May 31-June 9, 2022.

Hungarian F1 Grand Prix to be held without spectators

hungaroring hungary F1 2019

The Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix organizers said on the weekend that if the event goes ahead this year, it will do so without fans in attendance.

The race is planned for August 2 but F1 chiefs are currently working on a revised calendar for the 2020 season after the coronavirus pandemic forced cancellations and postponements.

“The Hungaroring team has been waiting until the very end and is still working with the international rights holder, but it has now become clear that we cannot hold the 35th Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix in front of spectators despite all our efforts,”

the grand prix organisers said in a statement.

Formula One CEO Chase Carey announced earlier this week that it is hoped the season could start on July 5 with the Austrian GP. But as governments around the world continue to restrict movement of large numbers of people, Carey made clear there may have to be some races held without fans.

Carey said he was now “increasingly confident with the progress of our plans to begin our season this summer.”

“We’re targeting a start to racing in Europe through July, August and beginning of September, with the first race taking place in Austria on 3-5 July weekend. September, October and November, would see us race in Eurasia, Asia and the Americas, finishing the season in the Gulf in December with Bahrain before the traditional finale in Abu Dhabi, having completed between 15-18 races,”

the F1 chief said.

Government, municipal assembly agree on conditions for 2023 World Athletics Championships

agreement of the athletics championships

Officials of the government and the new municipal assembly agreed on the conditions for Budapest to host the World Athletics Championships in 2023 at their meeting on Thursday.

A government decree codifying those conditions will be drafted before December 31, the head of the Prime Minister’s office said after a meeting of the Budapest Public Development Council.

Speaking at a press conference, Gergely Gulyás said that the central government and Budapest’s new leadership could reach consensus on health-care related development projects in Budapest.

Addressing the same press conference, Gergely Karácsony, the new mayor of Budapest, called it a major success for the city’s residents that the projects to be built in connection with the championships would be backed by a majority and would serve all sports-loving people.

As regards the construction of a superhospital in southern Buda, no consensus was reached, as the municipality disagreed with the sites proposed by the central government, they said.

Concerning the construction of a new bridge in southern Budapest and a revamp of Chain Bridge, the sides moved closer towards a consensus, but further talks would be necessary.

The gap between their views on the completion of the Liget museum quarter in the City Park has not narrowed.

Budapest council votes to support athletics world championships

2023 World Athletics Championships Budapest

The general assembly of Budapest has unanimously voted to support plans to host the 2023 World Athletics Championships, in return for the government’s meeting conditions the city set earlier.

One of the city’s preconditions is that the planned new stadium in District 9 to host the events should be constructed as a facility that serves local participant sports and could be used for cultural events, too, as part of a recreational park.

Another condition is that the government should increase the budget for the Healthy Budapest Programme by at least 50 billion forints (EUR 150m) to improve the districts’ health services.

Further, with a view to expanding green spaces in the city, work should begin on the afforestation project through creating at least 100 hectares of greenland.

The city also expects the government to meet earlier, contracted obligations with regard to public transport, and start recultivation of brown zone sites.

The assembly has authorised Mayor Gergely Karácsony to negotiate with the government concerning the planned world championships and give briefings on his talks.

Karácsony said the city was seeking “a good compromise” and argued that “we should listen to not only sports people but also to voters that think that too much has been spent on competitive sports and too little on health care”.

The mayor praised the government for its willingness to accept the municipal assembly’s position on the subject.

He added, however, that the government should confirm in writing its commitments made earlier to István Tarlós, his predecessor in the mayoral post. He said the city was “sceptical about the future” but it would “give cooperation with the government a chance”.

Past champions lobby for 2023 World Athletics Championships to be held in Budapest

athletics world champ lobby

Prominent Hungarian champions of the past holding the title of Athlete of the Nation have asked Budapest’s new leaders that the city should remain the host of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, one of them, Pal Schmitt, told MTI on Saturday.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) granted Budapest the right to host the prestigious event in December 2018.

The city’s bid included building a new sports stadium for the purpose.

Gergely Karácsony, Budapest’s new mayor elected last month, announced among his first measures a ban on building more sports stadiums in the capital.

The 12 athletes have now expressed concern over the latest developments surrounding the world athletics championships.

“We are convinced that organising such a major international competition could not only boost Hungary’s reputation, but also stimulate young people’s interest in sports,” they said.

Amazing: Hungarian canoe marathon legend wins her 20th gold medal

Kajak Kenu VB 2019

This year’s International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Championship was held in Shaoxing, China between 17 October and 20 October. The Hungarian team earned the most successful nation title with 21 medals in total. Canoe legend, Renáta Csay won her 20th gold medal at the championships.

The Hungarian team earned the most successful nation title as they together won 21 medals, which is twice as many as the second team has won.

Renáta won her first ICF world championship gold medal 20 years ago in 1999. The now 42-year-old canoe legend won her 20th world championship gold medal by piloting 24-year-old Zsófia Czellai-Vörös to a successful defence of their K2 title from 2018. It was Csay’s 13th K2 medal, and she is already planning to return next year.

Renáta Csay now has a gold medal for every year she has raced: 13 of them coming in K2, and 7 in individual K1 races. Alongside her 20 gold medals, she also has 11 silver ones. She is definitely the most successful canoe marathon paddler ever.

“I’m so thankful that I can still be here,” Csay said. “I don’t know how I keep doing it, I just like paddling. I will come back next year.”

Canoeicf.com writes that Csay and Czelia-Vörös did not have an easy time defending the gold medal they won last year. Two Spanish boats teamed up to make their race more complicated, and they were able to break free at the last minute. Czelia-Vörös said about the race:

“It was a bit tough; I think we had a big mistake at the first portage, but I think we managed because we knew that we could catch them.”

In the men’s C2, Dániel Laczó and Gergely Nagy won the bronze medal, and in the men’s K2, Adrián Boros and Krisztián Máthé won silver.
