Online platform Hungarians invented connects students around the globe

Bindr Founders

Postponing things and the stress and loneliness of the exam period – every student knows these problems, but 3 young Hungarian guys had an idea: On the platform of Bindr, they now sit in virtual classrooms from almost every country in the world to motivate each other and not be alone while studying.

Study together in an online room

The point of the Bindr platform is that students are all present in a video conference with their webcams turned on, where everyone is automatically muted.

The essence of the project is to create an online space that is like a library or a café, where the fact that others are working or studying will motivate people to focus on their tasks instead of postponing them or waste time on Instagram for example, says Forbes.hu.

So on the platform, while writing a lesson, reading a book, or working, we can be virtually close to others who are also working or studying.

Users said

“Best platform for uni-students ever. It helped me a lot to study with other students when everything is closed” – Mohammed, King’s College.

“I was not motivated at all studying from home during the pandemic until I tried Bindr. I suddenly felt connected” – James, Imperial.

“I used Bindr not only to study and motivate myself but also it gave me a sense of belonging. I miss being able to meet up with others, so sometimes I just come up here to talk about anything” – Cailes, Cambridge.

The innovative attitude of the three young Hungarian guys, Márton Kosdi-Kovács, András Geiszl, and Bálint Jakabos, has already culminated in several projects.

First, a page was created where students could ask each other about what they were learning. For example, if someone had a math question, they could search for a person with good math skills to get help from.

The startup has been registered in the UK. They decided to do so because András and Bálint studied there at the time of the creation. At the moment, all three of the founders are in Budapest, but they often commute between abroad and Hungary.

Last month almost 50k active users

Bindr now has registered users from around the world. In the last month, the number of active users per month was almost 50,000. A total of 300,000 students have registered on the site so far. Sometimes an American, an Indian, and a Hungarian student study together in a virtual study room.

The distribution of users is about the same as the distribution of the population of the continents. Many people use the classrooms from the Philippines, Brazil, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

American student in Pécs: unsatisfied with the university, became sick and lost 10 kg

University of Pécs

An American student, Brendan, spent four months at the University of Pécs (PTE). He arrived in Pécs in September 2021 from the University of Denver. He shared his experience on his Facebook page, but since then the article has been removed for some reason. However, the piece has been also published in the journal of the Denver University with the title: ‘Study abroad: frustration, illness & disappointment in Hungary’. The university has responded, arguing that the student’s claims are not considered credible.

Problems

The American student shared his lifelong dream of studying abroad in Europe in his blog, but his expectations did not meet the reality.

Upon entering the dormitory, his first shock came when he saw the “old building” inside which he claimed did not have properly functioning plumbing and electricity. However, this sounds unrealistic. According to his description, the toilets could not be flushed properly, the lights were flashing, bugs were crawling on the ceiling, and the internet worked poorly as well.

There were two barely functioning washing machines in the dormitory for 800 people.

We are talking about a dormitory that was built 50 years ago and underwent a complete renovation about 10 years ago, says Telex.hu.

Language barrier?

He claimed that he had to wait in line for hours to reach an English-speaking staff member. He had to submit five different papers to apply for a student ID card, which otherwise seems realistic. These were probably papers related to his studies and his stay in the dormitory.

The American student also lists it as a complaint that the cleaning staff opened the rooms in the morning and spoke only Hungarian.

He was not satisfied with the English skills of the university staff either. Even though there are 4,500 foreign students at the University of Pécs, the staff’s English knowledge was inadequate. According to him, the professors did not speak English well, and sometimes they had a hard time finding the right words, writes bahir.hu.

He was sick for almost the entire time

However, the key point of the article is that the student was ill during almost the entire four months he spent in Hungary. He struggled with sinusitis for three months, had bronchitis, sore throat, and tonsillitis twice. He lay sick in bed for a month, claiming to have lost 9.5 kilograms and developed an eating disorder.

Although there were doctors at the university, he found that neither he nor the students, in general, had access to adequate medical care. He traveled to Budapest several times to see private doctors and to get prescriptions for antibiotics. The student also caught Covid in Hungary, which certainly did not make his days rosier. In his article, he also criticised the fact that online education was not introduced at the university in the fall of 2021, making the rooms “breeding grounds for pathogens, difficult to concentrate in the room with constant coughing, growling and sneezing”. Nobody knew Zoom there, he added.

The student did not find the city of Pécs safe enough either. According to his description,

a local gang attacked two groups of foreign students close to the college.

The American student wrote that he was unaware of the Roma culture in the area, which scared him off taking public transport or walking around the train station and, in general, outside of the city centre.

The University of Pécs replied

The University replied to the blog post of the American student, stating that the dorm has great Google reviews, and the survey of the international students shows a high satisfaction rate overall

Telex asked the University of Pécs about the matter. The university’s press office asked the portal to publish their response without any editing, so we translated this source into English without any alteration in the text.

“The management of the University of Pécs was sorry to hear about our foreign student’s negative feedback. We don’t react point by point, we just touch on a few important topics that paint our dormitory in a negative light.

The main illustration does not depict the Boszorkány-kollégium but another building independent of the PTE, at the train station.

The American contact person, who assists students to apply to the university, visited Pécs a couple of years ago. The contact person was invited by PTE to get clear pictures of the university and the city so that he would be able to accurately orient the interested students. Therefore, he knows the locations and endowments, which means that the students applying here should not be surprised given they received proper information before their arrival.

It tells a lot about the college in question that the majority-based Google rating (on a scale of 5) has currently 4.3 stars, including text ratings such as:

»The Boszorkány Kolégium is one of the best dormitories in Pécs. Multi-story building with dining area and restaurant. Refrigerators are almost everywhere. The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are modernly equipped« or: »Well-equipped rooms, they look cultured, they have plenty of sockets and net access. Each block has a bathroom, toilet, and a fair refrigerator.«

Although the PPP design has made the development of dormitories significantly more difficult, the recent replacement of the design has also removed this hurdle, so that wireless internet will soon be available in addition to the existing high-bandwidth wired internet connection.

It is important to note that modern fire alarm equipment never goes off in the dormitory for no reason. If there is smoke in the building (for example, a student forgets the rules and lights a cigarette in the room), the alarm will go off, even at night, which is important and can be life-saving.

Cleaning and insect control occur regularly, there can be little complaint about hygiene – no one has really reported such cases. However, the cleaning staff always comes on weekdays, never on weekends, so the Saturday morning wake-up call mentioned in the description is, to put it mildly, unrealistic.

It is also worth mentioning that the PTE Clinical Center is the central patient care unit in the region, so of course, they provide medical care of the highest possible quality to everyone. At the same time, if foreign students had standard integrated health insurance it would certainly speed things up and make the process less complicated, which initiative would be also encouraged by PTE.

To conclude, there are areas that need upgrades and improvements are planned to be implemented shortly, but the situation is by no means as dire as it’s set out in the article.

Every year, our university conducts a satisfaction survey with international students, in which they can indicate on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, how much they would recommend PTE to their friends and acquaintances. In the most recent survey, conducted last summer, more than two-thirds of nearly a thousand respondents gave 4 or 5 ratings. Based on the surveys of recent years, it can also be stated that the students are more and more satisfied with Hungary, the city of Pécs and the University of Pécs.”

Court, government: Hungarian teachers’ strike was unlawful – UPDATED

Teachers' strike

A recently held warning strike staged by teachers’ unions was unlawful, the Municipal Appeals Court of Budapest ruled on Thursday. The appeals court, acting on a complaint by the human resources ministry, reversed a primary decision which had said that the two-hour strike, held on January 31, had been legitimate.

The government and teachers’ representatives could not come to an agreement concerning basic school services during the strike and went to court concerning the matter. The strike, however, was held at the originally planned time before the court could decide.

According to the appeals court,

the strike was held in lack of a relevant ruling, therefore it was unlawful.

Under the law, employees of providers of basic services must not go on strike unless the parties agree on the minimum of services to be provided during the strike. In lack of such an agreement, a binding court decision will stipulate the level of services to be ensured.

Teachers’ trade unions PSZ and PDSZ announced they would appeal to the supreme court for legal remedy.

UPDATE – 02.11. 14.29

“The government is always ready to negotiate but everybody must abide by the law,” the human resources ministry said in a statement on Friday, after an appeals court deemed a recent warning strike staged by teachers’ unions unlawful. “Children and parents are of paramount importance for the government,” the ministry said in its statement, adding that “education must serve the interests of children”

The statement said the government was currently taking measures to increase the wages of health care and welfare services staff, while “the dispute (with teachers) is about the timing of further pay hikes” for them.

Panic in Nyíregyháza, masses get sick in the school

Ambulance car budapest healthcare ambulance service in Budapest

On Tuesday afternoon, due to masses feeling sick, several children and adults were transported to the hospital from the József Eötvös Primary School and Grammar School, which belongs to the University of Nyíregyháza. A spokesman for the ambulance service said they took 12 children and 2 adults to the emergency department of the Nyíregyháza hospital for observation. They all complained about scratchy throats and a milder cough. Fortunately, no other symptoms appeared later in the hospital.

270 children in front of the school

Firefighters arrived at the scene with large units, but the disaster management unit did not register any signs of hazardous materials at the scene or inside the school building, a spokesman for the Szabolcs-Szatmár County Disaster Management Directorate told MTI. Szabolcs Online says that more than 270 children waited in front of the school while the police, firefighters, and ambulances investigated what caused the masses of people to get sick. Eyewitnesses said the area around the school looked completely chaotic during the afternoon, after the arrival of the firefighters and then during the investigation. Where, on a regular day, parents arriving for their children are parked, now police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and special vehicles for disaster management were lined up.

Chaos and possibly pepper spray caused the masses to get sick

According to hellomagyar.hu, the first pieces of information suggested chlorine gas poisoning, but the students and teachers interviewed did not smell the characteristic smell of the compound. Several complained that while they were leaving the school building, they felt something irritating their throats, causing them to cough. According to the report, one of the students said someone was “having fun” with pepper spray, and he sprayed most of the school with pepper spray, which caused the problem.

Pepper spray is a legal self-defence tool, used illegally in this case

Pepper spray is a self-defence tool that can be bought legally in Hungary and has an extremely unpleasant effect. It mainly causes tears and coughing; it has a strong effect in almost all cases. Of course, in self-defence situations, a smaller amount of it is used. In this situation, a larger dose may have been sprayed on the school grounds. We have no official information yet on whether the police are investigating the case, but it is likely that they will try to find the person who caused the situation.

These are the 30 best student cities in the world for 2022, including Budapest

budapest

The Campus Advisor announced the 30 best student cities in the world for 2022 based on ratings and reviews collected on thecampusadvisor.com!

Considering a range of factors including student friendliness, cost of living, nightlife, public transport, amenities, diversity, and the opinions of current students, The Campus Advisor has complied a list of the best cities to live and study in from around the world.

These are the 30 best student cities in the world for 2022 as decided by students:

1. Melbourne, Australia
Overall score: 4.69 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Melbourne is great:

“I lived in Melbourne my whole life, it is a great city. There are plenty of things to do whatever your hobbies are. Also if you want more “outdoor” activities the regional areas surrounding Melbourne also provide some excellent adventurous opportunities. The only downside is Melbourne is an expensive place to live. Renting is not cheap. But it has great opportunities to find work and support while studying”

“Melbourne is well-known for its numerous cafes, where people can meet and converse while sipping excellent coffee. Rooftop cafes are very popular in the city, so give one a try and you might end up being a regular while studying. If you’re a student in Melbourne, you should look for student discounts on things like transportation and books. Trams, trains, buses, and bicycles are available for students to utilise to get around.”

2. Newcastle, United Kingdom
Overall score: 4.53 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Newcastle is great:

“Newcastle is a fantastic, culturally rich city with lots to do and lots to explore. It is ideal for students. There is plenty of public transport that make it easy to navigate the city, and there is plenty of shopping and eating out that can be done within the city. Newcastle also offers some great outdoor areas, such as Jesmond Dene and other parks.”

“Newcastle as a city is extremely student-friendly. I think the most important aspect for myself, has always been safety and not once over the course of my 4 years here have I felt unsafe. Eating out and night-life is also fantastic in Newcastle, and does not cost you an arm and a leg. New restaurant/bars are consistently opening up, so there is a wide variety of cuisines and tastes available to try”

3. Seoul, South Korea
Overall score: 4.52 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Seoul is great:

“Seoul is a very safe, lively, and fun city. Transportation facilities are very good, and there are many things to do around Hongdae even at night, so many students enjoy life. It is also a good city for International students to live in because a lot of people speak English.”

“I attended Konkuk University and that area of Seoul has many activities for student such bars, restaurants, game centers, karaoke rooms, clubs etc. Because Seoul has many Universities, you can find similar students around your living radius. The only expensive part is lodging.”

4. Vienna, Austria
Overall score: 4.46 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Vienna is great:

“No question, Vienna is the best city I’ve ever lived in. Comparably cheap, good international exposure and very vibrant and distinctive culture. It has a small but amazingly active nightlife with great music coming from the city. There’s a good reason why it has ranked the world’s most liveable city multiple times.”

“Vienna is a beautiful city and it is very student friendly. Almost everywhere you get a student discount, people are very open to new friendships and architecture is beautiful. Especially in summer when you can sit at the danube you really enjoy your time.”

5. Montreal, Canada
Overall score: 4.44 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Montreal is great:

“Montreal is a huge student town. We have like 5-6 major quebec/canadian universities on the island. We have one of the largest proportion of students to population in North America. There are a lot of food options and I would say public transport is way better than other North American cities (a low bar ik but still important).”

“Montreal is a great city for both locals and internationals alike. There are tons of great restaurants, bars, concerts and events to suit everyone. The French component introduces an interesting cultural experience close the the US but is not overwhelming and very accommodating for English speakers.”

6. Berlin, Germany
7. Prague, Czech Republic
8. Chicago, United States
9. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
10. London, United Kingdom
11. Munich, Germany
12. Lisbon, Portugal
13. Ann Arbor, United States

14. Budapest, Hungary
Overall score: 4.31 out of 5

Why these reviewers think Budapest is great:

“Budapest is the perfect city for students. It has an amazing nightlife (pre COVID), relatively cheap, compared to other big cities, it is safe compared to other capital cities. It is good to make a few Hungarian friends at the beginning of your studies, so they can help you out with administrative stuff, but besides that, it is great for an international student, very friendly and lively city.”

“Budapest is a fantastic city, I love living here. Especially for students it is a paradise of opportunities, both for work and leisure time. Public transportation is available everywhere, making all places easily accessible, you can find a bar or a street food restaurant everywhere, even in the most remote places.”

More than 20 000 teachers took part in the warning strike in Hungary

school

Less than 20 percent of the country’s teachers participated in a warning strike called by trade unions for Monday morning, the human resources ministry told MTI.

The two-hour strike was held to call for higher wages and reduced workload.

The ministry called it “regrettable” that the trade unions had gone ahead with their strike plans despite the “absence of legal conditions”. It argued that the strike action had been based on a non-binding court ruling rather than a ruling that was already in force.

The ministry on Saturday told unions that the strike would be illegal as the Jan. 28 court ruling on the matter was not final. It is only lawful to hold a strike in Hungary in possession of a final court ruling on the matter.

Representatives of the teachers’ unions PDSZ and PSZ told a joint press conference on Monday that preliminary data showed participation by over 20,000 teachers in the strike which they called “a feast of democracy in Hungarian education”.

“We can be proud of our teachers who set an example”, they said, adding that “no matter how immense the pressure by the government was to thwart this strike it still went ahead”.

Zsuzsa Szabo, the chair of PSZ, said that those who participated in the strike called attention to the serious problem of many teachers leaving their profession. “If this trend continues there will soon be nobody in schools to teach our children who then will have no future, as much as this society will have no future either,” she said.

Erzsebet Nagy, an official of PDSZ, said the government had “exerted unprecedented pressure on teachers and parents as well” during the strike.

“There were schools where whole delegations of education supervisors appeared to threaten those participating in the strike and attempted to persuade teachers to return to their classes”, she said.

Commenting on the human resources ministry’s calling the strike illegal, Nagy said the government had not submitted any appeal against the non-binding ruling until 10am, the end of today’s strike. “This strike went to show not only the original reasons but the way the right to strike and democracy stand today in Hungary”, said Nagy.

PDSZ and PSZ called the strike in October. The unions’ want the benchmark for calculating teachers’ salaries to be the current minimum wage. At present, salaries are linked to the minimum wage in 2014. They are also calling for an increase in the salaries of people working in education who aren’t teachers. They also want the number of hours of classroom instruction to be capped at 22 a week, and they want teaching assistants’ hours reduced from a weekly 40 to 35.

Szabo said that the unions planned a general strike for March 16 if no agreement is reached on their demands with the government.

Early in the afternoon, a convoy of some 200 vehicles held a demonstration in downtown Budapest, in support of the strike. The demonstration organised by the trade union umbrella organisation SZEF started from Heroes’ Square and crossed over to the Buda side of the city before returning to the starting point.

The demonstration had no police escort, despite the organisers’ request.

In a statement ahead of the demonstration, SZEF told MTI that the demonstration was organised to express solidarity with the teachers, and also to raise awareness of “failing wage negotiations” in other sectors too.

Ruling Fidesz said in a statement that the strike was “a campaign event organised by the leftist parties”. “Leftist parties, which stripped teachers of a month’s pay and closed hundreds of schools, fired thousands of teachers and had them work for humiliatingly low wages [when they were on power before 2010], are now exploiting teachers and riling them up,” the statement said.

Budapest traffic to be “paralysed” by demonstration in solidarity with teachers’ strike

Traffic Jam Cars City

The Ministry of Human Resources (Emmi) has told unions that a strike planned by teachers on Monday would be illegal as the Jan. 28 court ruling on the matter was not final.

It is only lawful to hold a strike in Hungary in possession of a final court ruling on the matter.

The government called the unions to postpone Monday’s mass strike and to act within the law.

The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that children and parents had suffered enough already due to the burdens of the coronavirus pandemic. Students must attend school on Monday since the strike is illegal, it added.

However, Hvg reported that the traffic could be “paralysed” by a demonstration!

On Monday, in solidarity with the planned teachers’ strike, the Hungarian Trade Union Confederation (MASZSZ) will hold a demonstration on the streets of Budapest with 200 cars.

According to the news portal, the demonstration starts at 2 p.m. from Heroes’s Square with approximately 200 cars. The route of the procession is the following:

Heroes’ Square – Andrássy street (út) – Károly boulevard (körút) – Elizabeth Bridge – Attila street (út) – Alagút street (utca) – Fő utca (main street) – Bem embankment (rakpart) – Margaret Bridge – Szent István boulevard (körút) – Váci street (út) – Lehel street (út) – Dózsa György street (út) – Heroes’ Square.

The organisers said that this demonstration of solidarity with the teachers will also aim to facilitate general wage settlements.

Since the police refused to close down the areas for the duration of the demonstration, the organisers said that it will probably “paralyze” the traffic of Budapest

Would you teach for 865 EUR/month gross wage? Hungarians go on strike

Hungary student school

The teachers’ unions complain because of the low wages, overburdening administration, and many working hours. As a result, many Hungarian schools lack professional staff, and children do not receive the proper education they deserve. For example, 43 pc of schools do not have enough Math teachers.

Thus, some unions decided to go on strike at the end of January. The ministry immediately attacked them that they only use the teachers in the 2022 election campaign.

The rights of public education staff to strike must not be restricted, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony said in a statement jointly signed with mayors of the united opposition in support of a warning strike planned by teachers, on Wednesday.

Striking is “their fundamental right… to raise their voice against the grievances they have suffered”, the statement said, adding that “the government is planning to use ignoble means to thwart the strike planned for January 31”.

In their statement, the mayors said they had received reports of heads of schools threatening retaliation against employees participating in the strike action.

“We condemn any attempt at restricting this action,”

they added.

“The government should… negotiate rather than intimidate; find a solution rather than threaten,” the statement said.

Socialists exclude MP for lying about her diploma

Daily News Hungary Logo Új

Leaders of the opposition Socialists excluded MP Ildikó Borbély Bangó from party ranks at an extraordinary meeting on Sunday, after it was established that she “misled public opinion and the party” with regard to her level of education.

“The Socialist community has consistently condemned actions aimed at acquiring a diploma by circumventing or failing to fulfil requirements or fraudulent use of a non-existent degree,” the party said in a statement sent to MTI.

“From today, Ildikó Borbély Bangó is no longer a member of the Socialists…will not run in the election and is being called on to give up her parliamentary mandate,” it added.

With the decision, the Socialists “consider the matter closed” but expect “Fidesz politicians ruined by the Volner-Schadl corruption scandal to leave public life, too”, the statement said.

On Saturday, news portal Mandíner said Borbély Bangó’s curriculum vitae for parliament shows she was awarded a degree from the Budapest College of Economics, but the school’s legal successor, the Budapest Business School, could not confirm she got a diploma when asked.

The House of Hungarian Music has been inaugurated – PHOTOS, PROGRAMMES

Magyar Zene Háza House of Hungarian Music

In the middle of December 2021, the building of the House of Hungarian Music was finished in Budapest. For the design, the plan of Japanese star architect Sou Fujimoto was chosen from 168 entries in an open tender back in 2014.

As we wrote in our previous articles about the building, Attila Sághi, the Deputy Chief Technical Officer of Városliget Zrt., said that carrying out the plan of Fujimoto was a difficult task: in the lobby alone, there are at least thirty technical solutions that are the first of their kind in the region. In spite of it being a demanding challenge, the builders executed it perfectly.

On Saturday, 22 January, the House of Hungarian Music was finally inaugurated. The opening ceremony included a speech by Viktor Orbán, among others.

“We Hungarians are in a cultural expansion, financial crisis or not.”

According to Mandiner, he stressed that Europe is going through difficult times, with epidemics and waves of population migration.

“The European energy crisis is upon us, and ideological pressure from Brussels is mounting, while the political, military, economic, and cultural weight of our continent is steadily shrinking in comparison to the rest of the world,”

added Orbán in his speech.

The PM also underscored that the House of Hungarian Music is part of a huge cultural investment in the country. He said that according to the latest available data, Hungarian spending on culture is the highest in the European Union, albeit in a tie.

“Every new building is a risk, only the first glance at the finished building is reassuring.”

However, it is generally accepted that Sou Fujimoto has done an excellent job.

As MTI reported,

visitors can enjoy concerts, interactive exhibitions, creative spaces, and music education activities in the House of Hungarian Music,

said László Baán, the government commissioner for Liget Budapest, at the building’s inauguration on Saturday. The commissioner added that music is the best-known branch of Hungarian art around the world; however, the country never had a showcase of its music history, until now.

MTI also wrote that visitors to the House of Hungarian Music can hear performances, free of charge, by students of the Academy of Music in the coming days.

On top of that, an ever-busier programme of concerts, music-themed presentations, workshops, and music education activities will follow.

According to MTI, the venue’s first temporary exhibition will open in the autumn: it will be on Hungarian popular music in the decades before the change of regime. Other temporary exhibitions on the calendar also include international bands, such as the Rolling Stones.

Ticket sales for programmes at the House of Hungarian Music launched two weeks earlier, and “several thousand” have already been sold,

Baán said.

You can find all the programmes on the website of the House of Hungarian Music. Whether or not you are interested in music events or exhibitions, it is guaranteed you will find something that piques your interest.

EU funds withheld from Hungary over school discrimination?

Hungary student school
The European Commission withholds economic recovery funds from Hungary “because of educational discrimination”, Enikő Győri, MEP of ruling Fidesz, told MTI on Wednesday, quoting remarks by Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni, made at a recent Ecofin meeting.

Győri also quoted Gentiloni as saying at a personal meeting earlier that “recovery funds cannot be linked to issues of national competency without financial consequences”.

Győri insisted that the European Commission was “violating the law, taking a discriminative sabotage action, and playing political games”. At Tuesday’s Ecofin meeting

the Commission “admitted that it links issues that could not be connected under the EU treaties or under (EU) legislation on recovery funds,”

she said.

The Commission has violated an earlier agreement between EU leaders under which a rule of law mechanism could not be launched against a member state before a relevant European court ruling, Győri said, and called on the European Council’s incoming French presidency “not to give room to the Commission’s illegitimate behaviours” and to table the Hungarian government’s recovery plan before the body.

One of Hungary’s biggest universities cannot transfer the scholarships! – UPDATED

ELTE University Budapest

For reasons beyond their control, ELTE has not yet been able to transfer their students’ scholarships.

As 24.hu reported, on 6 January, ELTE students were notified that the university’s bank, the Hungarian State Treasury (henceforth: HST), introduced a new IT system this January.

The new system

However, according to HST, this new system could only be used starting from 10 January. Even according to university rules, scholarships are paid by the tenth day of each month.

Students still have not received their scholarships to this day. On 12 January, they received a letter which said that

for reasons beyond their control, the university still cannot transfer the money.

The university added that “together with external partners, we are working hard to fix the problem”. What is more, all problems caused by this disruption are being addressed as a matter of priority.

When contacted by 24.hu, ELTE said on Thursday that, unfortunately, the problem has not been solved. They are still working on it.

No legal consequences for students

ELTE assured everyone that

in the case a student is unable to meet their payment obligations towards the university due to the late transfer, they will not take any legal action against them.

24.hu would have liked to ask HST about the root of the problem, but they have not received a reply by the time their article was published.

About ELTE

The university has nine faculties with a total of approximately 28,000 students.

please be informed that the Hungarian State Treasury (BME’s account manager bank) is introducing new IT systems. The transfer from the old system to the new one will start on January 10th, 2022.
Please note that because of the above system transfer, the scholarship transfer and the acceptance of the payments to the Neptun joint account may be delayed by a couple of days.
According to the above information, the scholarship transfer will start no earlier than January 10th, 2022, and the payments to the Neptun joint account will be available in Neptun no earlier than January 10th, 2022.

Hungarian higher education expo opened in Budapest!

educatio_international_expo_budapest
Hungary’s government has been working for 12 years to ensure that young Hungarians are “truly the winners of the future” and see their future in their home country, the minister of innovation and technology said on Thursday, opening the 22nd Educatio international expo in Budapest.

The government has earmarked more than 1,000 billion forints (EUR 2.8bn) in development funding towards the education sector for 2022, László Palkovics said, adding that education spending will reach 1.9 percent of GDP this year.

Palkovics noted that the Hungarian government in 2014 embarked on a scheme to transform the higher education system, devising a structure aimed at making universities more competitive by having them tailor their programmes to the needs of the market.

The scheme is aimed at creating universities founded on knowledge, innovation and talent which cooperate more closely and effectively with businesses, he said.

Hungary’s youth have embraced these changes, the minister said, noting that last September close to 70 percent of students began their studies at universities that have shifted from being state-run to being operated by foundations.

Palkovics also noted that the wages of some 50,000 employees of Hungarian universities run by the state, foundations and churches will have increased by a total of over 30 percent in January on the back of two hikes in 2021 and 2022.

Omicron spreads shockingly fast in Hungary

Coronavirus Szent László hospital
Altogether 67 patients died of a Covid-related illness during the past 24 hours, while 7,883 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Wednesday.

Fully 29 percent of new infections have been caused by the Omicron variant, official data says. However, we reported HERE that Neumann Labs said the new variant was present in 78 pc of their samples at the beginning of January. This rate was above 60 pc in December.

According to MTI, so far 6,297,101 people have received a first jab, while 6,039,940 have been fully vaccinated. Fully 3,299,569 Hungarians have received a booster jab. The number of active infections has risen to 118,945, while

hospitals are treating 2,758 Covid-19 patients, 257 of whom are intubated on a ventilator.

Since the first outbreak, 1,308,877 have been registered with the virus, while 40,083 deaths have been recorded. Fully 1,308,877 people have made a recovery.

Eduline.hu reported today that the number of infected skyrocketed in elementary and secondary schools. In some Budapest schools, all students are home and take part in online education. In another school, students and teachers produced 50 positive tests last week. Therefore,

no open days will be held in the schools in January and February. But the Educatio fair will be organized.

The trend of the growing number of new infections started in December. Since the inoculation rate of the students is not high enough, the omicron variant spreads quickly among them. A third of the 5-18-year-old students received one, and a quarter of them two jabs. For teachers, the state prescribed obligatory vaccination. As a result, 780 teachers left the education system since they refused the jab.

postapalota Money Museum budapest

The museum bears the full name of Hungarian National Bank (HNB) Supervisory Centre and Money Museum and will be located in the former Post Palace on Széll Kálmán Square. As their official website says, the museum is unique in Europe.

The museum will offer a mix of modern education, interactive exhibits, immersive time travel, and stunning architecture,

Origo reports.

The building

The former Post Palace is a monumental heritage and has undergone a complete renovation in recent years.

The building of the Money Museum is an architectural marvel. The contractors have developed a specific restoration plan for the restoration of the façade, as well as for the carpentry, masonry, and wrought-iron work.

Along with the restoration, the construction of the exhibition and experience area is also underway.

The inside of the museum

The security of the building is also very important: it will hold the large coin collection of the HNB and a real gold bar. According to the museum’s website, gold will play an outstanding role in the exhibitions and will appear in several forms. For example, at the start of the exhibition, visitors will see a thinly stretched golden thread in a display case. This thread then steps out of the case and shows the route of the exhibition as a strip of light on the floor.

The museum’s main task will be to explain the basic rules of using money and how economic processes work.

The Money Museum will open to the public on 15 March 2022. Until then, keep visiting the museum’s website and Facebook page to stay up to date.
