Tallai tasked with restructuring tax office
Budapest, October 13 (MTI) – Andras Tallai has been appointed government commissioner in charge of restructuring the tax office (NAV), the Economy Ministry said on Tuesday.
Tallai will carry out the related tasks in his capacity as economy ministry state secretary until the end of the year, the ministry said in a statement. He will prepare legislation necessary for the restructuring and will report to Economy Minister Mihaly Varga, it added.
Varga said earlier that NAV’s main operations would eventually be folded into the economy ministry and the authority’s seven regional directorates abolished and their duties taken by county-level government offices. He also indicated that the 23,000-strong workforce would be streamlined.
The tax office will classify businesses as reliable, average or risky starting the second quarter of 2016, and those paying their taxes appropriately will get more preferences next year, Tallai told the press conference. The economy ministry will submit a proposed amendment to legislation on taxation to parliament later on Tuesday.
The opposition insisted earlier the reason for Tallai’s appointment was to exert political influence at the tax office and protect businesses close to the government.
