Tax police uncover HUF 3 bn tax dodge
Budapest, January 26 (MTI) – Hungarian tax police have uncovered a crime ring operating through a network of Hungarian and Slovakian companies, and the tax office (NAV) is demanding repayment of unlawfully claimed refunds of almost 3 billion forints (EUR 9.7m) in value-added tax, NAV said on Monday.
Altogether 12 suspects have been taken into custody.
The organisation hid its illegal dealings behind a front of above-board trade in consumer electronics and home applicances, the NAV said. Last week, 300 financial investigators joined 50 tax inspectors and 70 excise officers in an operation which investigated 100 sites, it added.
