Yesterday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán visited Sharm El-Sheikh at the invitation of American President Donald Trump to witness the beginning of the peace process in Gaza. Orbán stood behind Trump as the president introduced his allies one by one. Trump spoke warmly of Orbán and even made a prediction about next year’s elections, though what he said may displease many.

Old allies

The relationship between Trump and Orbán is remarkably longstanding by modern political standards, nearly a decade old. While most people initially dismissed Trump’s re-election chances last year, viewing his rise as little more than a spectacle, Orbán had already declared his support for Trump in the summer of 2016, agreeing with his anti-immigration policies.

At the time, this step raised eyebrows in political circles, but it proved a smart move, even though Joe Biden defeated Trump in 2020, causing considerable strain in Hungarian-American relations.

Given this old alliance, it was no surprise that the Carmelite Monastery in Budapest also received an invitation to yesterday’s peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, where key powers — the United States, Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar — brokered agreements on a ceasefire and steps towards peace.

PM Orbán and Egyptian president Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi:

What does the agreement involve?

The agreement’s details include a ceasefire in Gaza, a prisoner exchange (including the release of the last Hungarian citizen held since 7 October 2023), Israeli withdrawal, and delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Further talks will follow regarding implementation, a final political solution, and Gaza’s reconstruction.

Trump, who has long played a peace-bringing role, recognised the importance of this step and rallied his allies around him. Viktor Orbán commented in a morning video that there is indeed a global peace-promoting network, whose representatives would be present.

Supporting Trump — literally

Trump did not just want people to attend; he wanted them to physically demonstrate their support. According to sources cited by HVG, the Americans specifically requested the invitees — including Orbán, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — to stand behind the president. Trump then introduced each ally, offering words of support.

Orbán will win even bigger, Trump believes

Trump said of Orbán that he is fantastic, a wonderful leader. According to Trump, only his own opinion counts here, suggesting that without his backing in 2022, Orbán’s party, Fidesz, would not have won by “28 points”. The accuracy of this claim is uncertain; HVG notes that Fidesz gained 19% more votes on the list than opposition alliances, but won with a two-thirds majority due to the quirks of the Hungarian electoral system. In other words, Trump’s numbers are questionable.

However, Trump also looked to the future, predicting Orbán would perform even better in the next election and vowed to back him 100%. This means Trump expects Fidesz to govern with an even stronger two-thirds majority after 2026.

Tisza leads in the polls

Polls and experts believe this forecast is unlikely. All non-governmental polls show Péter Magyar’s Tisza leading Fidesz by a significant margin. Even Ágoston Sámuel Mráz, head of the government-leaning Nézőpont Institute, admits that a smear campaign against Péter Magyar has not been successful, though he later denied having made such a statement.

Both Trump and, intriguingly, his global political rival, Russian President Vladimir Putin, have openly supported Orbán. Putin says that if Hungarians want to remain Hungarian, they should back Orbán; otherwise, Ursula von der Leyen should be their choice. Putin added that if national forces grow stronger in Europe, the continent may experience a rebirth.

Putin flattered Trump

Recently, Putin praised Trump highly, suggesting that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize should have been awarded to the American president. Putin stated that Trump has done much to resolve complex crises. Trump himself shared these words on his Truth Social channel.

From Hungary’s side, Péter Szijjártó, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, had already spoken in September 2020 about how Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, as he was the one who brought the so-called Abraham Accords to fruition.

Disappointed about the Nobel Peace Prize?

Reports say Trump was disappointed that the five-member Nobel Committee did not award him the prize. Perhaps this explains why Venezuelan laureate and leader of the local political resistance, Maria Corina Machado, immediately called to congratulate him. She told Trump the prize was actually his. Trump agreed in his account of the call but joked that he did not ask her to hand it over — though he added he might accept it if she offered. “She was very kind,” he said.

He also explained the prize was for 2024 activities, during which he was campaigning, and said the prize helped him a great deal.

Despite this, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the press that the Nobel Committee chose politics over peace in making their decision, according to the Anadolu Turkish news agency.
