Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, on Wednesday visited the logistics centre of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary.

He said he believes that Hungary’s decision not to allow deliveries of weapons to Ukraine had guaranteed the organisation’s safe operations in the war-torn country.

The logistics centre was set up in Debrecen because the border crossing between the two countries is safe, he said.

“We are providing everything needed to facilitate aid for people facing difficulties in Ukraine and those fleeing the war,”

he said.

“We’re conducting the largest humanitarian operation in Hungary’s history, with tens of thousands of people working in Hungary to help refugees and send aid to Trancarpathia and the whole of Ukraine,”

he said.

At the same time, the government’s priority is to protect Hungarians from the war, Szijjártó added.
