A 1.8 billion forints (EUR 5.62m) neutron research laboratory, the first of its kind, will be set up with EU co-funding at Martonvásár near Budapest, the Hungarian project company’s head said at the facility’s groundbreaking ceremony on Friday.

The research lab will make use of a technology that is faster, safer and a lot more cost-effective than technologies employed currently in neutron laboratories in the world,

Csaba Petermann said at the event.

The technology is based on three methods patented by Hungarian neutron physicist Ferenc Mezei, the majority owner, who will professionally oversee the research project, he said.

The hall for the 800sqm laboratory is expected to be completed by this autumn and the first tests are planned to be conducted in the summer of 2020, according to a press release.

The EU is providing 1.3 billion forints for the project.
