Budapest (MTI) – The US embassy in Budapest held a celebration of America’s 240th Independence Day at the ambassador’s residence on Friday.
US Ambassador Colleen Bell told MTI that her country is proud of the strong democratic values whose foundations were first laid down in the Declaration of Independence.
Bell said the US has strong economic and cultural ties with both Hungary and the EU, which it intends to develop further in the future.
The ambassador also paid tribute to the victims of the Istanbul airport attack.
Defence ministry state secretary Tamás Vargha said freedom and independence, two values that the US and Hungary share, “go hand in hand”. But freedom must also come with a respect for the rules, he added.
The celebration was also attended by Interior Minister Sándor Pintér, chief public prosecutor Péter Polt and other officials.
