Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar was spat on by a man at Budapest’s Nyugati railway station on Wednesday morning, shortly before unveiling the government’s new railway development strategy alongside Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy.
The incident, which was captured on video, occurred as the two politicians were at Nyugati railway station ahead of a press conference presenting the Baross Gábor Railway Development Plan at Rákospalota-Újpest railway station.
Man confronts prime minister
According to footage published by Hungarian media, a man approached Magyar and Vitézy at Nyugati station.
The man reportedly shouted: “How could you? You dared to come here?!” When he received no response, he spat at the prime minister from behind.
Magyar reacted calmly, wishing the man “good health” before commenting:
“This is what remains of the faces of Fidesz.”
He then added that perhaps this was why former Transport Minister János Lázár had not travelled by train.
Political tensions still high
It is not the first time a politician from the governing Tisza Party has reported being spat on in public. In November 2025, MP Kriszta Bódis said she had been spat on in the street.
Commenting on this new incident on Wednesday, Bódis wrote that those serving in public life must sometimes endure unfair treatment, adding that she believed years of political hate campaigns had contributed to such behaviour and expressing hope that public discourse would improve.
