The Hungarian army has served the country’s peace and security for 175 years, the defence minister said on Facebook on Friday.
Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said “whatever history could inflict, our soldiers heroically stood their ground, giving their blood and life for the homeland when needed”. “The future will be built on that tradition; that tradition will give the strength and background to build a modern, digital army with the courage and patriotism of today’s youth,” the minister said. The Hungarian military was formed by Hungary’s first independent government on April 7, 1848, MTI wrote.
We need to acknowledge the patriotism of the Hungarian military. We need to acknowledge that the efforts by the Hungarian government to improve its military are on the right track. We also need to acknowledge that the current size of the Hungarian military is completely inadequate to defend the country. We also need to acknowledge that the current effort to improve weapons & equipment (after 30 years of neglect) are inadequate in both numbers and speed. Right now there is a war next door that could quickly spill over into Hungary and the country is not prepared either militarily or diplomatically.
