Videoton bow out of European competition
Ten-man Videoton FC were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat at home against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night as mistakes at both ends of the pitch cost them dear.
Videoton head coach Marko Nikolic woud have expected to have had a pretty good idea of how Partizan would set up away from home having been at the helm of the Serbian side as recently as this spring, but he would surely also have expected his new players at Videoton to capitalise on the useful goalless draw they achieved away in the 1st leg in Belgrade last week.
As it was, his side capitulated in the first half at the Pancho Aréna in Felcsút, their temporary home while the Sóstoi stadium in Székesfehérvár is being renovated. Firstly a mistake from Suljic allowed Tawamba to score after just six minutes before the home side’s attacking players contrived to miss several glorious chances to equalise, Danko Lazovic and Henty particularly culpable. Things then got even worse when the Vidi defence was outmanoeuvred twice within a few minutes either side of the half-hour mark, the first of two right-wing crosses converted easily by Soumah in a central position 14 metres out in the 24th minute before Gurgevic slid in a similar pass at the back post eleven minutes later.
A 3-0 deficit at half-time left Nikolic’s side needing four unanswered goals to progress to the Europa League group stages but their task became mountainous when experienced defender Roland Juhász received his second yellow card of the match and was dismissed early in the second half. Although last season’s Hungarian league runners-up tried to apply some pressure they were unable to find any way into the game and were instead hit again on the counter-attack in the final minutes, Gurgevic volleying his second goal of the night inside Ádám Kovácsik’s near post in the 87th minute to seal a 4-0 result on the night and an aggregate victory for Partizan by the same scoreline.
Videoton will now turn their attentions back to the domestic league championship and a big match against the country’s most successful club Ferencváros on Sunday.
