A 17-year-old student worker has died in a tragic workplace accident at an industrial company in Szeged, southern Hungary, after being pulled into an industrial cutting machine. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
According to local newspaper Délmagyar, the fatal accident occurred on Thursday at the premises of a construction industry company. The teenager, who had been working a summer job through a contracted partner company, could not be saved after the machine pulled him inside.
The Csongrád-Csanád County Police Headquarters confirmed the incident and said criminal proceedings have been launched on suspicion of negligent endangerment causing death in the course of employment, a criminal offence under Hungarian law.
Company confirms fatal accident of student worker
The company’s director confirmed that the victim was employed by one of its contractual partners rather than directly by the firm itself. In a statement, the company said:
“A tragic accident occurred at our Szeged site on 16 July, resulting in the death of an employee of one of our contractual partners. The case is being investigated by the police and the competent authorities, with whom we are fully cooperating.”
The company added that it would not comment further until the official investigations are concluded and expressed its sincere condolences to the victim’s family.
Investigation underway
According to local reports, the machine involved was used to cut and package insulation boards for the construction industry. Such industrial cutting machines may use high-speed circular saws, band saws or heated wire systems, depending on their design.
Some models contain partially exposed cutting mechanisms, making them particularly hazardous and subject to strict occupational safety regulations. Police have not released further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
