Beyond Lake Balaton and Tisza: 5 underrated Hungarian lakes to visit this summer

Looking to escape the crowds this summer? Discover the hidden beauty of Hungarian lakes beyond Balaton and Tisza. These five underrated gems offer stunning scenery, tranquillity, and the perfect splash of adventure, whether you are going with friends, family, or flying solo.
Lake Deseda
Nestled near Kaposvár in southern Hungary, Lake Deseda (Deseda-tó) is the country’s longest artificial lake and a true hidden treasure among Hungarian lakes. Surrounded by lush forests and equipped with cycling paths, picnic spots, and a modern visitor centre, Lake Deseda is ideal for families and nature lovers. Its calm waters are perfect for swimming, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the shore with a good book.

Lake Szelidi
Located near Kalocsa, Lake Szelidi (Szelidi-tó) offers a charming blend of natural beauty and local tradition. Often referred to as the “gem of the Danube Bend,” this shallow, alkaline lake is renowned for its warm waters and therapeutic qualities. Less commercialised than bigger resorts, Lake Szelidi gives you a more authentic experience of Hungarian lakes, with charming beach areas, local eateries, and summer festivals.

Lake Arlói
Tucked away in the Bükk Mountains, Lake Arlói (Arlói-tó) is a peaceful spot beloved by anglers and campers. Formed by a natural landslide, this picturesque lake is surrounded by wooded hills and has crystal-clear water. Ideal for a rustic getaway, Lake Arlói offers an off-the-beaten-path experience that showcases the wilder side of Hungarian lakes, with opportunities for fishing, hiking, and simple relaxation.

Lake Hársas
Found near the Austrian border in Őrség National Park, Lake Hársas (Hársas-tó) is a pristine escape into untouched nature. With its clean waters, scenic walking trails, and tranquil atmosphere, this small lake is perfect for a low-key summer holiday. Unlike more commercialised Hungarian lakes, Lake Hársas offers serenity, birdwatching opportunities, and a chance to disconnect from the bustle of modern life.

Lake Fertő
Straddling the border between Hungary and Austria, Lake Fertő (also known as Fertő-tó or Lake Neusiedl) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Though better known in Austria, the Hungarian side remains underrated and uncrowded. With its reed-fringed shores, cycle routes, and bird reserves, Lake Fertő offers a unique twist on the typical Hungarian lakeside holiday, one rich in biodiversity, history, and charm. While many dislike the lake for being too muddy, it is one of my personal favourites in Hungary!
