Pálinka

There is no household in Hungary where you cannot find at least one dusty bottle of pálinka somewhere in the pantry, maybe on top of an old shelf if the residents are not drinkers. Pálinka is the most well-known ancient beverage of Hungarians.

It is a spirit made of fruits, usually of apricots, plums, cherries or pears, but there is a saying among Hungarians that “there is no fruit from which you cannot make pálinka” (which is of course not necessarily true, but sounds nice). Be warned: it is quite strong, and people who are not used to it tend to feel a little bit sick when they try it for the first time.

Unicum is regarded to be one of the national drinks of Hungary. The production facility offers tours which include the tasting of the two different varieties: Unicum, and Unicum Plum. According to the manufacturer, the original Unicum is no longer distributed in the US, having been replaced by Unicum Next, which is a sweeter, thinner-bodied drink with a more prominent citrus flavour.
