MOL chief sees legal option for fighting Croatia’s arrest warrant

Budapest, October 22 (MTI) – There is a legal possibility that in some countries the arrest warrant put out by Croatia on Zsolt Hernádi, chairman-chief executive of Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, could be ignored, Hernádi told business weekly Figyelo.

Hernádi said he had been travelling since the middle of the summer and he added that he regards the Croatian warrant as being in breach of the law. He told Figyelő in an interview published on Thursday that he had complied with every request from authorities to supply documents in his case over the past two years. Further, it is strange that the warrant should still be in place after a ruling from the Croatian constitutional court which had annulled it, he told the weekly.

Hernadi was again placed on Interpol’s wanted persons list in February this year. Being on the list means that any member state of Interpol must take him into custody and return him to the country where he is originally wanted, in this case, Croatia. Hernádi was suspected of having bribed former prime minister Ivo Sanader to give MOL management rights in Croatian peer INA. Hernadi was cleared of the charges in a Hungarian court.
