Hungary woke up to a bitterly cold Friday, with temperatures falling below freezing across most of the country. A new autumn cold record was set in the north-east, where thermometers dropped to -9.16°C in Tornyospálca, according to weather portal Időkép.

The latest figures came after Thursday had already brought a seasonal record in Zabar, Nógrád County. Időkép reported that temperatures there fell to -7.3°C on Thursday morning, before the colder night pushed the record even lower.

Hungary’s national weather service, HungaroMet, also reported a new seasonal low on Friday, recording -8.3°C in Zabar. According to the service, temperatures dropped below zero across most of the country overnight. Only cloudier areas in the west, higher-elevation locations and inner-city districts remained above freezing.

Frost and fog across much of the country

The cold affected a large part of Hungary, with many areas recording temperatures between -1°C and -6°C. The north-eastern region around Tornyospálca was among the coldest, while other well-known frost pockets also experienced freezing conditions.

The clear skies and calm winds overnight allowed temperatures to fall sharply. Mist and dense fog also formed in several places, accompanied by frost, creating a distinctly wintry scene in the early morning hours.

According to Telex, the national average temperature early on Friday was 4.7°C below the seasonal norm.

More freezing mornings expected this weekend

The cold spell is not expected to end immediately. Although sunshine should dominate during the daytime over the weekend, clear skies at night are likely to bring further widespread frost.

Időkép warns that several areas could experience particularly severe freezing conditions in the early mornings, so residents and visitors should keep their winter coats close at hand.

For Friday, once the mist and fog clear, mostly dry and sunny weather is expected. The eastern parts of the country may see somewhat more cloud, while daytime highs are forecast to reach between 7°C and 13°C.
