Azerbaijani community in Hungary is worried about the situation on the frontline between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces

Azerbaijan war

The Chairman of Azerbaijani-Hungarian Youth Union, Ibrahim Safarli contacted Daily News Hungary to express that Azerbaijani community in Hungary is worried about the worst violence for decades over the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces violated the ceasefire with Azerbaijan more than 100 times in various directions of the front line and caused significant death of Azerbaijani civilians and soldiers in the past 72 hours.

Ibrahim_Safarli_2It started in April 2, 2016 after Armenia started targeting civilians densely residing in the territories adjacent to the frontline area and opened intensive heavy weapons fire at the positions of Azerbaijan’s armed forces along the line of contact. As a result of artillery attacks of Armenian armed forces a number of civilians were killed and seriously wounded. Substantial damages were also inflicted upon the private and public properties. As a result, the armed forces of Azerbaijan have taken the necessary counter measures within its internationally recognized borders to ensure the safety of civilian population, to stop the provocations of Armenia and to deter it from further acts of aggression. Currently, the situation remains tense.

He emphasized that the situation escalated into real war again after the ceasefire signed in 1994 between two countries. The chairman also recalled that Armenia claimed the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan starting end of the 1980s, and then started undeclared war to Azerbaijan and occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region and its surrounding 7 regions in the beginning of 1990s which is almost 20% of total territory of Azerbaijan. The permanent Azerbaijani inhabitants of this region were either killed or expelled and became internally displaced people. Moreover, he mentioned that Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions (822, 853, 874, 884) adopted in 1992-1993 as well as UN General Assembly resolution (62/243) adopted in 2008 which demand unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions. These resolutions also reaffirm that those territories are integral part of Azerbaijan. He also thanked Hungary for supporting territorial integrity of Azerbaijani Republic since the conflict started.

The Chairman noted that Azerbaijani-Hungarian relationship improved over last few years, trade, business opportunities and cooperation on youth level improved between 2 countries. There are currently hundreds of Azerbaijani youth who live, work and study in Hungary and they are deeply concerned that peace in Caucasus region is under danger. Azerbaijani community of Hungary calls the international community to demand from Armenia to cease the illegal occupation of Azerbaijan’s territories, to withdraw its troops from all seized lands and to engage constructively in the conflict settlement process in accordance with the requirements of relevant resolutions of the UN and the norms and principles of international law.
