Hungary and especially Budapest has a lot of ongoing development projects in this period, and one of them includes the renewal of a public park in the heart of district IX in Ferencváros with a total of 9,000 square metres of area.

Back in October 2020, Pestbuda reported that the planning phase of the Markusovszky Square, a 9,000 m2 public park will be reworked since the previous developments did not fulfill their purpose.

What makes the project unique is that according to the news site, the local residents were involved in the planning process by being able to vote in a questionnaire about what they wished to see in the park.

More than 300 people answered a questionnaire and 75% of them imagined the park to be an area where people can relax and spend their free time. 62% of the people who answered the survey mentioned the necessity of a clean and modern, easily accessible public toilet in the park, while 60% of them wanted the park to include a playground.

According to the public’s needs, the park will include an outdoor fitness area, a dog park, a fountain as well as a sports field and a BUBI (bicycle renting service) station, Pestbuda reports.

Pénzcentrum wrote that the local municipality of district IX is aware of the parking problem around the square and wanted to include an underground parking lot with a total of 120 parking places right beneath the public park.

Additionally, to make it more easily accessible, the renewed Markusovszky Square will have 24 bicycle racks around the park and the aforementioned BUBI station will house 11 rentable bicycles.

With the rebuilding of the park, the designer is planning on planting new trees and raising the functional green area of the park to 4,500 square metres.

As Pénzcentrum reported, the plans of Markusovszky Square located between the Kinizsi, Köztelek, Biblia and Üllői streets are rendered by the TSPC Group which is well known for its major planning developments in the city.

TSPC Group was the one that designed the stunningly modern Széllkapu park, Central Europe’s largest public recreational park with over 26,000 square metres of green area.

The engineering company also lists in its portfolio the design of Europe’s largest university sports terrace, built on the top of the new University of Physical Education.

Hopefully, the plans will be as precisely implemented as in the case of Széllkapu Park and the Hungarian capital will be enriched by another green spot in the heart of the city.
