Although the summer holiday season is over, passenger traffic at airports shows no sign of slowing in autumn. Taking advantage of milder weather and cheaper air fares, growing numbers of travellers are opting for city breaks in September and October or late-season beach holidays. But motorists heading to Budapest Airport must pay close attention not only to their travel arrangements, but also to tighter and recently revised parking rules.
Strict parking rules at Budapest Airport
Most drivers are now familiar with the access and parking restrictions in force immediately outside the terminals, including the strictly enforced free drop-off period. In the zones closest to the terminals, vehicles may remain free of charge for just five minutes.
Yet many travellers are still unaware of the current rules and tariffs. Exceeding the permitted time can result in an uncomfortable wait and unexpected additional charges.
“The limited free period in front of the terminal is really only long enough for someone to jump out of the car with a suitcase. There is no longer any opportunity to wait for an extended period or say a proper goodbye,” said Béla Rácz, marketing director at MoPark.
Comfortable alternatives
“We are seeing that most travellers are now actively looking for alternatives, as they do not want to pay the high daily rates charged near the terminal or deal with the pressure of racing against the clock.”
According to the expert, travel habits have undergone a clear change in recent years. Using off-site car parks near the airport that provide a transfer service is no longer the preserve of budget-conscious travellers; it has also become one of the most popular options among families and business travellers.
From secure parking complexes located just a few minutes from the airport, dedicated shuttle services take passengers and their luggage to the terminal, helping them avoid congestion and additional costs around the airport buildings.
What to consider when leaving your car for days or weeks
During seasonal travel peaks, including the autumn shoulder season, available spaces can quickly fill up. Travellers are therefore advised to book airport parking at least one or two weeks before departure, after comparing the available options and prices.
Those planning to drive to the airport and leave their vehicle in long-term parking should also bear a few important points in mind.
MoPark’s first piece of advice is not to leave valuables inside the car. “Although enclosed, CCTV-monitored car parks with round-the-clock staff provide a basic level of security, bags, electronic devices and even cash left in plain sight can create an unnecessary temptation,” Rácz said. He also recommends checking the battery and tyres before setting off.

“Cooler autumn nights can expose a weak battery after a car has been left standing for several days. Before travelling, make sure your vehicle is in good working order and check the tyre pressures as well.”
The expert added that covered parking spaces offer the best protection against autumn rain and falling leaves. Those using an outdoor car park should ensure that all the windows are fully closed.
“Our aim is to ensure that the holiday does not begin with the stress of searching for a parking space and unnecessary drop-off surcharges at the airport. By planning ahead, motorists can keep their vehicle safe while arriving comfortably and on time at the departures area with the help of a transfer service,” Rácz said.
