Budapest court hands over Rwandan accused of attempted murder
A Budapest court has decided to fast-track the extradition of a Rwandan man against whom a European arrest warrant has been issued by the Belgian authorities in connection with charges including organised crime, attempted murder and torture.
The court has issued a deadline of 14 August for the Belgian authorities to receive the suspect, after which date he would be released, the Metropolitan Court said in a statement on Monday.
A mobile phone video recording left at the crime scene shows the kidnap and torture of a Dutch national in Eindhoven on 22 February. The victim was then driven to Belgium and tortured in the car and then at a warehouse in Antwerp before being taken to Poppel, where the vehicle broke down. The victim was subsequently found by local workers and taken to hospital.
The suspect faces a maximum prison sentence of 30 years.
