Budapest starts cleaning the Rákosrendező area where it baulked the UAE’s Mini-Dubai project

The municipality of Budapest is prepared to remove household waste of unknown origins from the city’ Rákosrendező area and will let the pollutant pay when possible, the director general of the mayor’s office told an informal panel discussion on Wednesday.
Ambrus Kiss said that the municipality had no exact knowledge of the amount of waste deposited in the area of the 14th district, over which it exercised its pre-emption rights earlier this year, preventing an investment of United Arab Emirates investors there. Kiss noted that a contract is yet to be signed, as another party with pre-emption rights has not yet declared its intentions.
After initial assessment of the state of the area, the municipality will start damage control and waste disposal, he said. He noted that the contract did not contain provisions on the city’s obligations on the deadline or the value of the waste management works.
City Hall will dispose of household waste of unknown origin, Kiss said. As regards to cases where the polluter can be identified, Kiss said the municipality will employ the principle of “the polluter pays”.
Plans for the open tender on the cleaned area are expected to be submitted to the Budapest Assembly meeting in June, he said. The municipality will also initiate convening a coordination body between Budapest and the government, Kiss said.
