Planning to travel around Budapest this weekend? Liberty Bridge is closed to road traffic, three major tram lines are suspended, and several bus services are diverted on 19–20 September. While visitors will be able to explore parts of the city centre without cars, the closures also mean significant changes for passengers who usually travel through the area by tram or bus.

Budapest’s Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd), connecting Fővám Square in Pest with Szent Gellért Square in Buda, is closed to regular road traffic on Saturday and Sunday.

The closure is part of European Mobility Week, with sections of central Budapest temporarily transformed into pedestrian-friendly event areas. However, visitors and residents should expect changes to several important public transport routes.

Which roads are closed in Budapest?

The restrictions affect Liberty Bridge and several surrounding streets, including Vámház körút near Fővám Square, Műegyetem Quay on the Buda side, and sections of the Lower Pest Embankment. The embankment closure began on Friday evening, while the wider restrictions apply throughout the weekend.

Trams 47, 48 and 49 are not running – what are the alternatives?

Tram lines 47, 48 and 49 will not operate on 19 or 20 September. These services normally connect southern Buda with central Pest via Liberty Bridge.

Passengers can use the following alternatives:

  • To cross between Buda and Pest: Take metro line M4. Tram lines 4 and 6, and buses 7 and 133E, also remain available on their usual routes.
  • On the Buda side: Tram 61 runs on an extended route to Városház Square, while tram 56A serves Kelenföld railway station. An additional tram 61B operates on Saturday.
  • Around central Pest: Metro line M3, bus 9 and trolleybus 72 offer alternatives to the suspended trams along the Small Boulevard.

Several other services, including buses 15, 107 and 223E and some night buses, are also affected. Passengers should check individual routes before travelling.
