Budapest’s popular car-free promenade reopens to pedestrians

Budapest’s beloved Pesti alsĂł rakpart (Pest lower Danube promenade) is once again open to the public, starting from the weekend of 15-16 March 2025. This popular initiative allows residents and visitors to enjoy a car-free environment between the Margaret Bridge and the Elizabeth Bridge, near the Irányi Street exit, offering a serene and picturesque setting for relaxation and recreation.

A favourite among locals and visitors

The Pest lower promenade has become a cherished destination, especially on weekends when it provides an opportunity for thousands to engage in leisure activities or sports. Despite the challenges posed by flooding in 2024, which limited access from March to October, the promenade remains a vibrant spot. On the available weekends and holidays, over 10,000 people visited the area daily, BKK reports.

Access and safety

Visitors can access the open section via the pedestrian paths along the lower promenade or by using the trams on the upper promenade. It is important to note that walking on the road between Elizabeth Bridge (Irányi Street) and Közraktár Street is not permitted. Cyclists and roller skaters are advised to be cautious and respectful of pedestrians, especially children.

Upcoming developments

The Budapest Transport Company (BKK) has submitted proposals for the development of the Id. Antall JĂłzsef Promenade and the area under Elizabeth Bridge. If these projects receive favorable funding, construction could begin this summer. The BKK also plans to submit a proposal for the renovation of the Jane Haining Promenade. These developments are part of a broader initiative to enhance Budapest’s riverfront, supported by the European Union’s climate adaptation and public space renewal program.

National celebrations and traffic adjustments

On 15 March, which marks a national holiday, there will be road closures and changes in public transportation due to related events. The BKK will provide updates on these adjustments and encourages visitors to be mindful of the surrounding festivities.
