Dyed water surfaced near the CATL battery plant in Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, on Tuesday, the mayor’s office said in a statement, adding that experts were investigating the situation.

The water was used in a pressure test earlier in the day, dyed green to make it easier to determine leakage, the statement said. After the test, the dyed water was released into the sewage system, where it surfaced again due to a blocked pipe.

According to information received from CATL leadership, the company conducting the pressure test and the local waterworks, the water is not contaminated, the mayor’s office said.

The pollution has been localised and municipality employees will ensure it does not find its way to natural waters, the statement said. The water’s lab analysis is also under way, it added.

Update: EcoPro contains chemical leak at plant in Debrecen

The local unit of South Korea’s EcoPro said it contained a chemical leak at its cathode materials plant in Debrecen in a statement issued on Wednesday.

EcoPro BM Hungary said about 22.6kg of semi-finished lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide leaked from a displaced pipe connection overnight on Monday. The leak affected a small area of the plant and caused no injuries. No hazardous material was released from the building.

The leak was cleaned up and the faulty connector replaced. Production equipment was restarted after a full inspection and validation procedure.
