A cold front will reach Hungary on Monday, bringing a slight drop in temperatures as September begins. However, forecasters say genuinely autumnal weather is still some way off, while the country’s drought is unlikely to ease significantly.
Cold front arrives on Monday
Hungary will see a change in the weather on the final day of August, as a cold front reaches the country on Monday, 31 August, according to HungaroMet.
The front will bring somewhat fresher mornings in early September, but temperatures will remain relatively high. In the afternoons, temperatures could still approach 30°C in many parts of the country. So while the calendar is about to turn to autumn, the weather will not be making a dramatic seasonal switch just yet.
Rain may finally reach a wider area
The cold front could also bring the most widespread rainfall of the week. Current forecasts suggest that rain could fall in several parts of Hungary by Tuesday morning. However, HungaroMet warned that there remains considerable uncertainty in the forecasts, with some models still pointing towards a considerably drier scenario.
This means that although the front could provide some much-needed rainfall, it is unlikely to deliver a major breakthrough in the country’s persistent precipitation deficit.
Drought set to continue
HungaroMet’s weekly precipitation outlook indicates that the drought is unlikely to ease significantly during the coming week. The lack of rainfall has remained a major concern after an exceptionally hot and dry summer, and the start of meteorological autumn is not expected to bring a substantial change in conditions.
The coming days will therefore bring a combination of fresher mornings and relatively warm afternoons, rather than the sustained cool weather many people associate with September.

No real autumn just yet
For those already looking forward to autumn, there is still a little longer to wait. The cold front will lower temperatures by a few degrees, but HungaroMet says genuinely autumnal weather is not yet on the horizon.
Instead, September will begin with moderately warm conditions, while the rainfall situation is uncertain and the country’s drought could persist. In other words, summer may be taking a small step back, but it is certainly not ready to disappear just yet.
