Enjoying spring? Cold front to hit Hungary within hours: storms, strong winds expected

Change language:

A sharp change in Hungary’s weather is expected later today, as a cold front sweeps in from the northwest, bringing strong winds, showers and the risk of thunderstorms.

According to HungaroMet, the front will arrive in the late afternoon and evening hours, ending the current spell of calm, warm spring weather.

Sunny and warm before the sudden change

Before the front arrives, much of the country can still enjoy sunshine and mild conditions. Temperatures are forecast to reach between 21°C and 25°C, with light southerly winds bringing warm air.

However, this pleasant weather will not last long.

Storm activity has already been detected in neighbouring Austria, with rain cells and lightning gradually approaching Hungary: an early sign of the incoming front.

Strong winds and thunderstorms on the way

As the cold front moves in, winds will shift to the northwest and strengthen significantly. In some areas, particularly near rain showers, gusts could briefly reach storm force.

Rainfall is expected to be mostly in the form of scattered showers, though thunderstorms may develop, especially in western and northwestern regions.

Front to move through overnight

The weather system will continue moving eastwards overnight, gradually weakening as it crosses the country. By Monday morning, the front is expected to leave Hungary.

Despite this, conditions will remain unsettled.

More wind and showers expected on Monday

Behind the front, brisk northwesterly winds are forecast across much of the country on Monday. Additional showers and even isolated thunderstorms could form in the northeast due to atmospheric convergence.

There is also a chance of further showers and thunder in the southwestern border areas later in the day.
