Ferencváros suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in a high-profile friendly at Budapest’s Groupama Arena on Saturday, but the Hungarian champions gave their illustrious opponents plenty to think about and found the net through Kenan Kodro.
Fradi impress against European giants
Real Madrid took control late in the first half when Mario Rivas headed the visitors in front, before Carlos Espí doubled their advantage shortly after the interval. Ferencváros responded through Kodro in the 57th minute and grew into the game, but could not find the equaliser.
The result nevertheless represented a memorable occasion for Ferencváros, who welcomed one of football’s most decorated clubs to their home ground.
Groupama Arena turns white and green
The match attracted an unusually large number of Real Madrid supporters, with fans wearing shirts bearing the names of stars such as Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo.
Inside the stadium, Real Madrid shirts were considerably more prominent than usual alongside Ferencváros’ traditional green-and-white colours.
On the pitch, however, the colours were reversed. Ferencváros wore a new pale-gold and off-white kit, while Real Madrid appeared in green. The atmosphere was lively from the start, with the stadium filling rapidly before kick-off.
Real Madrid dominate but Fradi stand firm
Ferencváros did not appear intimidated by their illustrious opponents and created several promising attacks in the opening stages, although their efforts failed to seriously trouble the Madrid goal.
As the first half progressed, Real increasingly controlled possession. Their quick passing and explosive movement forced Ferencváros deeper, with the visitors repeatedly attempting shots from distance.
The hosts’ first major defensive test came in the 36th minute, when Endrick found space in the area, only for goalkeeper Dénes Dibusz to keep out his close-range effort.
Real’s pressure finally produced a goal in the 41st minute. Arda Güler’s corner reached Alexis Ciria, who returned the ball into the danger area, allowing Mario Rivas to head Madrid into the lead.
Madrid’s stars make their mark
The second half brought a major change in personnel for the Spanish giants, with Vinícius Júnior, Dean Huijsen, Antonio Rüdiger, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Carlos Espí and Bernardo Silva among those introduced.
The arrival of several established stars immediately increased Madrid’s attacking threat. After an impressive passing move, Federico Valverde provided the final pass for Carlos Espí, who finished calmly to make it 2-0.
Ferencváros responded quickly. In the 57th minute, Kristoffer Zachariassen delivered an excellent cross from the right, and Kenan Kodro met it at the near post to fire the ball into the bottom-left corner. The Groupama Arena erupted, with even some Real Madrid supporters applauding the home side’s goal.
Fradi push for an equaliser
The goal changed the complexion of the match. Ferencváros began escaping the pressure that had characterised much of the first half and regularly worked their way towards Madrid’s penalty area.
Zachariassen came close again with a header, but his effort went straight into the hands of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.
Real continued to threaten from set pieces, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Valverde and Güler among those around a late free-kick. Güler ultimately sent his effort over the crossbar.
As the final whistle approached, Ferencváros looked capable of finding an equaliser, with the flow of the game suggesting they were closer to making it 2-2 than Real were to extending their lead. The second goal ultimately failed to arrive.

Encouraging test ahead of European football
Real Madrid therefore left Budapest with a 2-1 victory, but Ferencváros can take considerable encouragement from their performance.
The Hungarian side competed well against one of the world’s biggest clubs, absorbed sustained pressure, scored against Madrid after the interval and created chances to level the match.
The friendly was nevertheless only part of a busy summer schedule. Ferencváros’ attention now turns to the return leg against Górnik Zabrze in Europa League qualifying.
That fixture will carry far greater competitive importance, but after their performance against Real Madrid, Fradi can approach it with plenty of confidence.
