Former US ambassador: “If Trump wins, he will come to Hungary”

David B. Cornstein, the USA’s former ambassador to Budapest, said in an interview that if Trump won he would come to Hungary to visit PM Viktor Orbán. He added that it was a big deal that the US president unexpectedly called Mr Orbán when the PM was at home just waiting to eat his lecsó.

Mr Cornstein gave an interview to Klubrádió in which he highlighted that before his nomination, there was no American-Hungarian relationship because the Obama administration only criticised the Orbán-government. Therefore, there was no chance for development – 24.hu reported. Afterwards, he talked about the successes of his ambassadorship and said that

his achievement would serve as a perfect basis for further cooperation between the two countries.

He is satisfied with his work in Hungary because PM Viktor Orbán’s and President Donald Trump’s friendship shows that today the American-Hungarian relationship is perfect. He also said the President unexpectedly calling PM Orbán is a big deal.

We reported HERE that when Mr Cornstein was handing in his resignation letter to Trump, the President said, out of the blue:

“Let’s call Viktor!”

And if it was not unexpected enough, Cornstein added that the call had reached Orbán right in his home, while he was in the kitchen. “I was puttering around,” said the prime minister to Blikk, “warming up some food”. Then he adds proudly that the food in question was lecsó based on his wife’s recipe (named ‘European champion’), which is also published in her recipe book A konyhaablakból (From the Kitchen Window).

Orbán said that during the call “on his old Nokia”, they briefly talked about the presidential elections – “neck and neck, but I’m going to win,” said Trump –, and how the two governments are handling the pandemic. Orbán also asked the President about the current status of vaccine research in the US, and whether vaccines would also be available in countries outside the States.

Trump gave a reassuring answer: “You can count on me.”

Cornstein now said that if Trump wins he will accept the invitation of PM Orbán and he will come to Hungary. He also said that the US president likes Hungary and the Hungarians very much and he knows that from Mr Trump himself.

The former ambassador added that PM Orbán is not popular in the United States, but that is chiefly because the American media is very liberal. Interestingly, he also criticised the Hungarian epidemic response law (the opposition said that it was an authorisation act), but he thinks that the government did not abuse it.

Mr Cornsein is satisfied with the work of the Orbán-government

and said that if he were able to start again, he would develop better cooperation with the US ambassadors of the region.

Before Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán said that they prepare for the victory of Donald Trump, there is no alternative B for the Hungarian government. The Guardian reported that populist politicians support Trump because they fear that if Biden wins the American diplomacy will turn back again to value-based international relations. They added that Poland is the other great supporter of Trump in Europe and

both countries say to the criticism of the European Union that Trump, the leader of the USA, is their influential ally.
