Four Hungarian universities have secured places among the top 1,000 universities globally, according to fresh results from one of the most influential international rankings of world-class universities. In the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and the University of Szeged emerged as Hungary’s joint highest-ranked establishments, both finishing in the 501–600 band.

Hungarian universities slip in Chinese-led ranking

Semmelweis University was placed in the 701–800 group, while the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) fell into the 901–1,000 bracket. Compared with last year’s standings, the University of Szeged dropped one band, as did both Semmelweis and BME; ELTE’s position remained unchanged, which under the circumstances counts as a modest success.

It is worth noting that the ARWU does not primarily measure teaching quality or student satisfaction. Compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the list focuses instead on universities’ performance in international scientific research.

The compilers analyse roughly 2,500 institutions, but publish results only for the top 1,000. Considerable weight is given to factors including the number of Nobel laureates and Fields medallists affiliated with each university, the count of highly cited researchers, and papers published in Nature and Science. Studies indexed in major international scientific databases and overall institutional research output are also taken into account, eduline.hu wrote.

American and British universities dominate the elite

US universities continue to dominate the global elite. Harvard University retained first place, followed by Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The top five was completed by the University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley. Within the top ten, alongside further American institutions, Oxford and Columbia University in London also featured.

Consequently, the Hungarian universities’ placements chiefly reflect their standing in research and scientific output on the international stage, and do not in themselves imply that these institutions offer uniformly high standards across all fields of study.

Incidentally, the ranking was first published in 2003 and, since 2009, has been produced by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an organisation independent of governments and universities.
