A young girl has been taken to hospital with a serious limb injury after she was hit by a 144 bus while cycling in Budapest’s 14th district on Wednesday afternoon. Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Girl injured in collision with turning bus

The accident happened at around 4 PM on Wednesday at the junction of Vezér Street and Fogarasi Road in Zugló, the Budapest Transport Company (BKV) told Telex. According to BKV, a 144 bus travelling towards Rákosszentmihály hit a child who was riding a bicycle. The girl was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance.

The National Ambulance Service told Telex that it had received an emergency call about the accident and that its crews transported a child from the scene to hospital with a serious limb injury. The girl was in a stable condition at the time.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and BKV said it would provide further information once the investigation has been completed. Traffic changes were in place in the area until 5 PM on Wednesday because of the accident.

Reports say bus ran over girl’s leg

According to earlier reports by Telex and Ma.hu, the girl had been cycling with her mother and brother and was crossing Fogarasi Road when the collision occurred.

The reports said the mother crossed in front of the bus, but the girl, who was following her, collided with the side of the vehicle and fell to the ground. The bus’s rear wheel then reportedly ran over one of the girl’s legs.

Telex reported that the family had been cycling along Vezér Street from the direction of Füredi Road and intended to continue towards Mogyoródi Road. Although much of Vezér Street has a cycle path, it merges into the bus lane shortly before the junction.

According to information obtained by Telex, the mother crossed first when the traffic light was green, followed by her daughter and then her son. The 144 bus was travelling in the same direction but turned right onto Fogarasi Road. The mother passed in front of the bus, while the girl behind her was hit.

Junction has seen previous serious accidents

The junction of Vezér Street and Fogarasi Road has previously been the scene of serious traffic accidents. In 2012, a 79-year-old woman was hit by a 144 bus at the crossing. Another person was hit by the same bus at the junction in 2013, according to reports cited by Telex. In 2025, a 231 bus reportedly fatally struck a 30-year-old man at the same junction while turning.

The latest accident is being investigated by the Budapest Police Headquarters.
