Government to give 5,000 old people computers with internet access

Five thousand Hungarians over the age of 65, most of them living alone in remote villages, will be given a computer with an internet connection thanks to a new government scheme, the daily Magyar Idők reported on Thursday.

State secretary for infocommunications Károly Balázs Solymár told the paper that the scheme, which includes a computer course for the new users, will be implemented with a budget of 1.2 billion forints (EUR 3.8m) between now and August next year.

The paper noted that some 430,000 people, 4.5 percent of Hungary’s population, were over 80, adding that the number would more than double by 2050.
