Great news for commuters: Budapest Metro to run longer hours from June

The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) informed MTI on Tuesday that Budapest Metro lines 2, 3, and 4 will continue to run from June 1. More than forty daytime and numerous nighttime services will be adjusted to the extended operating hours.

Budapest metro and changing travel habits

According to their announcement, the change is in line with altered travel habits. The last trains depart from the city center around midnight on weekdays and around 1 a.m. on weekends, running every 10 minutes.

On weekdays, from Sunday night to Thursday night, metro line 2 will depart from Deák Ferenc tér in both directions at midnight, metro line 3 will depart for Újpest-központ at 12:03 a.m. and for Kőbánya-Kispest at 11:56 p.m., and the last train on line 4 will depart from Kálvin tér towards Kelenföld at 0:04.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the last train on line 2 will depart from Deák Ferenc tér in both directions at 1:00, Metro line 3 will run towards Újpest-központ at 1:03 a.m. and towards Kőbánya-Kispest at 12:56 a.m., while Metro line 4 will run from Kálvin tér towards Kelenföld at 1:04 a.m.

The timetables of surface services closely connected to the metro will also be modified, with both weekday and weekend services adjusted to the last metro departures from the city center around midnight.

As a result, more than 40 daytime services will run in coordination with the extended metro operating hours, making it easier to reach the capital’s outer districts even at night.

The expanded metro service will also affect night buses running parallel to the metro, some of which will no longer operate at night or on their entire route, and some of which will be replaced by additional services. The biggest change is that night buses running on the route of metro line 3 will be replaced by buses during metro operating hours, with buses 914 and 950 running from Határ út in the south and in the north by bus 914, typically from Nyugati pályaudvar, and bus 950 from Újpest központ. The timetables for services 931, 990, 907 and 908A will also change.
