Hungary has seen the departure of one of its most highly regarded soldiers as Brigadier General Imre Porkoláb has officially ended his service by mutual agreement, according to a decree published in the official Magyar Közlöny (Hungarian Gazette) on Thursday evening.
Hungarian general ends military service during outgoing government’s state of danger
The decision, approved by the President upon the recommendation of Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, brings to a close a distinguished career spanning over three decades. Porkoláb was widely recognised not only within Hungary but also internationally, having represented NATO at senior levels, including a post at the Pentagon, writes 24.hu.
A soldier with extraordinary capabilities
A trailblazer in his field, Porkoláb became the first Hungarian soldier to graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1994. He later played a key role in developing Hungary’s special operations capabilities and served in missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His career also included high-level strategic positions, such as representing NATO’s Allied Command Transformation in the United States.
He even got into outgoing PM Viktor Orbán’s cabinet
Beyond operational duties, Porkoláb contributed to defence strategy and innovation. He led initiatives in military modernisation and briefly served as a ministerial commissioner for defence innovation in 2022. Following his early dismissal from that role without public explanation, the soldier continued his work as an adviser within the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office.

He’s not the only one, but it is weird that it happened twice
His academic credentials include executive training at Harvard University and studies in organisational innovation at Stanford University. He also authored books on military strategy and was active in leadership training. Porkoláb’s departure coincides with that of Lieutenant General József Kovács, a former head of Hungary’s military intelligence, who has likewise left service by mutual agreement.
