Hungarian companies to participate in Africa’s biggest economic and transport development programme
The government aims to see as many Hungarian companies as possible participate in the Lobito Corridor, Africa’s biggest economic and transport development programme, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said after a meeting with Angolan Minister of Transport Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu in Budapest on Wednesday.
The Lobito Corridor programme, which involves the construction of more than 1,000km of railway along with power grid infrastructure, enjoys the backing of both the United States and the European Union, Szijjártó said in a statement issued by his ministry.
He said the sides had also signed an air services agreement paving the way for the launch of direct flights between the two countries. Angola has some of the largest crude reserves in Africa and aims to upgrade its production technology and renovate offshore infrastructure, projects in which Hungarian companies could play a role, he said.
Hungary’s ties with Angola have been enhanced by the re-opening of its embassy in Luanda nine years earlier, he added. Szijjártó said a Hungarian company had won a contract to supply Angola with biometric passports, and exports of Hungarian seeds to the country had started.
