Hungary has accepted more than 600,000 refugees since the war broke out in Ukraine, and runs humanitarian transit points equipped to help children as well as adults, Kinga Gál, an MEP of ruling Fidesz, said in her address to the European Parliament on Tuesday.

At the EP’s plenary session in Strasbourg, Ylva Johansson, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, said that more than 2 million Ukrainian children have fled the war so far. They are in danger of falling in the hands of human traffickers, she said, and called on the EP to distribute unaccompanied minors among the EU member states.

Johansson called on member states to increase their capacities to accept a larger number of refugees with special focus on children living with disabilities, and to instruct border guards to register refugee children.

In her address, Gál called for a “scrupulous investigation of war crimes.” She called it “unacceptable” that “innocent people, children among them, are becoming victims of Russian aggression.”

Andrea Bocskor, a Fidesz MEP for Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region, said refugee children in Hungary had access to health-care services, psychological therapy and education. She also called for support for internally displaced children within Ukraine.

There are currently around 380,000 internally displaced Ukrainians in the Transcarpathia region, 36,500 of them children, 700 unaccompanied,

she said. European Union support in school and kindergarten meals would be “great help”, she said.
