Shockingly high rate of the Hungarians afraid of Ukraine’s EU accession

Fully 72 percent of Hungarians believe that fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union would harm Hungary rather than benefit it, a survey published by Századvég on Thursday has shown.

Altogether 22 percent of the survey’s respondents said fast-tracked EU membership for Ukraine would be beneficial for Hungary. The think-tank said in an article that fast-tracking Ukraine’s admission to the bloc would cost Hungarian households close to half a million forints (EUR 1,200) a year.

Századvég said the freedom of movement that would come with Ukraine’s EU membership involved security risks that would impact the everyday lives of Hungarians.
