Budapest, September 24 (MTI) – Thousands of soldiers of the Hungarian army will be present with transport vehicles and tanks to protect the country’s southern borders, the chief of staff said on Thursday.
Tibor Benko told public news channel M1 that soldiers will continue building a fence along the Croatian-Hungarian border and border protection will involve several elements. Work is progressing according to schedule, he added.
Benko said that a military exercise dubbed Resolute Action 2015 was carried out as a result of the migration situation. With the help of the exercise, the army has been prepared for tasks connected to handling the pressure of migration and the necessary regal regulations have been approved by parliament. These detail the various law enforcement tasks. Soldiers are entitled to check documents, search people and handle crowds but the rules on the use of arms have not changed, Benko said.
He said some 4,300 soldiers participated in the military exercise and the number at the border will not be less.
