Hungary’s Tisza government will double enhanced family allowances from 2027, extending the previously announced increase to families raising children with long-term illnesses or severe disabilities. Around 1.7 million children and one million families will benefit from the wider package, backed by nearly HUF 300 billion in additional funding in the 2027 budget.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has confirmed that the planned doubling of family allowance payments will also cover recipients of enhanced benefits, including families caring for children with long-term illnesses or severe disabilities, adults entitled to support in their own right, and children living in foster care or residential institutions.
In a Facebook video, Magyar outlined the exact new monthly amounts, saying the measure would extend the increase across all categories of family allowance recipients.

Enhanced benefits for children with disabilities to double
The enhanced family allowance paid for approximately 134,000 children with long-term illnesses or severe disabilities will rise from HUF 23,300 to HUF 46,600 (EUR 127) per month from 2027.
For parents raising an affected child alone, the monthly payment will increase to HUF 51,800 (EUR 141).
The change will also benefit more than 28,000 adults who qualify for the allowance in their own right because of a long-term illness or severe disability. Their monthly support will rise to HUF 40,600 (EUR 110).
Children living with foster parents, in children’s homes or in other eligible institutions will also be covered. The standard monthly allowance in this category will double from HUF 14,800 to HUF 29,600 (EUR 80).

How much will families receive from 2027?
The government previously announced that ordinary family allowances would double, and Magyar has now confirmed that the increase will apply across the board.
The new monthly rates for families raising children in their own households will be as follows:
- Families with one child: HUF 24,400 (EUR 66) per month, up from HUF 12,200.
- Families with two children: HUF 26,600 (EUR 72) per child, or HUF 53,200 in total each month.
- Families with three or more children: HUF 32,000 (EUR 87) per child per month.
Single-parent families will receive higher amounts:
- One child: HUF 27,400 (EUR 75) per month.
- Two children: HUF 29,600 (EUR 80) per child per month.
- Three or more children: HUF 34,000 (EUR 93) per child per month.
The wider increase is expected to benefit around 1.7 million children and one million families across Hungary.
Family allowance has not increased since 2008
Magyar highlighted that Hungary’s family allowance rates had remained unchanged since 2008, meaning the benefit had lost more than half of its purchasing power over the intervening years due to inflation.
The doubling is intended to address that long-standing decline in the value of the support. The additional expenditure required for the measures is expected to reach nearly HUF 300 billion (approx. EUR 817 million) in the 2027 budget.
