Hungary issues first heat alert of the season as temperatures soar

Hungary’s meteorological service, HungaroMet, has issued the country’s first heat alert of the summer, with parts of the country expected to experience exceptionally high temperatures over the coming days.

According to an official warning released on Wednesday, daily average temperatures in Csongrád-Csanád and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok counties are forecast to exceed 27 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The alert expands further on Friday, when Békés County is also expected to experience similar conditions.

Orange heat alert for southern and eastern counties, yellow for others

A second-level (orange) heat alert has been issued for Csongrád-Csanád and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok on Thursday, indicating significant health risks due to the prolonged high temperatures. HungaroMet notes that these regions could see sustained daily average temperatures well above seasonal norms.

First-level (yellow) alerts have also been put in place for several other counties on Thursday, including Baranya, Bács-Kiskun, Békés, Fejér, Hajdú-Bihar, Pest, and Tolna. In these areas, daily averages are expected to climb above 25 degrees Celsius.

Conditions worsen on Friday

The situation is not expected to improve by the end of the week. On Friday, the 27°C threshold may again be surpassed in Csongrád-Csanád, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, and Békés counties. Meanwhile, Baranya, Tolna, Fejér, Pest, Bács-Kiskun, Heves, Hajdú-Bihar, and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg are likely to see average temperatures remain above 25°C.

Meteorologists are urging residents in affected regions to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and check on vulnerable individuals, particularly children and the elderly. The high temperatures also increase the risk of heat-related illnesses and place added strain on healthcare and emergency services.

As Hungary heads into the peak of summer, authorities are reminding the public to stay informed through official weather updates and to take heat alerts seriously.
