Anyone already planning trips, holidays or time off in Hungary next year can start marking their calendar: Hungary public holidays 2027 will produce six guaranteed long weekends, including a four-day Easter break. Several other public holidays, however, will fall on Saturdays or Sundays, while the status of Christmas Eve remains uncertain.

According to Pénzcentrum, the 2027 calendar is relatively straightforward, with no obvious need for the usual Hungarian system of moving working days to Saturdays – although one important question could still change that.

Hungary public holidays 2027: The full list

Hungarian labour law currently provides for 11 public holidays each year. Eight have fixed dates, while Good Friday, Easter Monday and Whit Monday move according to the Christian calendar.

The public holidays in 2027 will fall as follows:

  • 1 January, Friday – New Year’s Day
  • 15 March, Monday – anniversary of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence
  • 26 March, Friday – Good Friday
  • 29 March, Monday – Easter Monday
  • 1 May, Saturday – Labour Day
  • 17 May, Monday – Whit Monday
  • 20 August, Friday – St Stephen’s Day and the foundation of the Hungarian state
  • 23 October, Saturday – anniversary of the 1956 Revolution
  • 1 November, Monday – All Saints’ Day
  • 25 December, Saturday – Christmas Day
  • 26 December, Sunday – Second Day of Christmas

For foreign visitors, it is worth remembering that public holidays in Hungary can affect shop opening hours, public administration and some services, although restaurants, tourist attractions and transport may operate according to separate holiday schedules.

Six long weekends are already guaranteed

The distribution of Hungary public holidays 2027 creates six long weekends without any additional government intervention.

The year will start with a three-day break from 1–3 January, as New Year’s Day falls on a Friday. Another three-day weekend follows on 13–15 March, with Hungary’s national holiday falling on Monday.

The longest guaranteed break comes at Easter. Good Friday falls on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, creating a four-day weekend from 26–29 March.

Three further three-day weekends will follow: 15–17 May around Pentecost, 20–22 August around St Stephen’s Day, and 30 October–1 November around All Saints’ Day.

Pénzcentrum therefore counts five three-day weekends and one four-day weekend in the calendar as it currently stands.

Not every national holiday will bring additional time off. Labour Day on 1 May and the 23 October national holiday both fall on Saturdays. Christmas is even less favourable in calendar terms, with 25 December falling on Saturday and 26 December on Sunday.

Will Hungary have Saturday working days in 2027?

For many foreigners living in Hungary, one peculiarity of the Hungarian working calendar can be surprising: the government can designate an ordinary weekday as a rest day and compensate for it by making a nearby Saturday a working day.

The final arrangement is set annually by ministerial decree. Under the Labour Code, the responsible minister has until 31 October of the preceding year to determine changes to the standard working schedule.

As of 21 September 2026, the decree setting out the 2027 schedule has not yet been published. Based purely on the calendar, however, there is no Tuesday or Thursday public holiday that would normally create a reason for an additional bridge day and a corresponding working Saturday.

There is one possible exception.

What happens to Christmas Eve?

24 December 2027 falls on a Friday, but under current legislation Christmas Eve itself is not a public holiday.

The government could nevertheless designate it as a rest day in the annual working-time decree, as has happened in previous years. If that happens, employees working a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule could receive a three-day Christmas break from 24 to 26 December, but the extra Friday off could have to be compensated for by working on a Saturday.

There is also a separate debate over whether 24 December should become a permanent statutory public holiday. A nationwide referendum initiative submitted by the Trade Union of Commercial Employees asks precisely that question, and the National Election Office lists the initiative among the 2026 referendum procedures.

Until the government publishes the official 2027 working calendar, travellers and employees should therefore treat the Christmas period as provisional. The six other long weekends, however, already provide several opportunities to plan extended breaks in Hungary throughout 2027.
