Fully 70 percent of Hungarians say they are likely to vote in the June European Parliament elections, according to a fresh Eurobarometer survey.
Altogether 65 percent of Hungarians say they are interested in voting on June 9, which is 15 percent more than those who said so ahead of the 2019 elections, the survey found.
A total of 46 percent of Hungarian respondents said they had a positive view of the EP as against 39 percent who said they had a neutral view and 14 percent who were negative.
Altogether 56 percent said they wanted the EP to play a bigger role, while 9 percent said they wanted to keep the legislative body’s role as it is now, and 32 percent said they want it to play a less important role.
Asked about their priorities ahead of the ballot, most Hungarians (39 percent) cited public health as the most important issue, followed by job creation (38 percent) and the future of the EU (35 percent).
When it comes to areas the EU should focus on in order to reinforce its position in the world, 40 percent chose energy independence and infrastructure as the most important area. This is followed by defence and security (34 percent), competitiveness, economy and industry (33 percent) and food security and agriculture (31 percent).
Meanwhile, 77 percent said the EU had an impact on their daily life compared with 23 percent who said it didn’t. Concerning the benefits of EU membership, 77 percent said Hungary has on balance benefited from being a member of the bloc, which is 6 percentage points higher than the EU average.
Even though the Hungarian government has been conducting an anti-Brussels campaign for years, it seems that does not have an impact on the Hungarians’ thoughts about the community, which makes Huxit impossible.

Hungarians obviously see beyond the poisonous rhetoric of their Fidesz government. They respect and are thankful for what the EU has done for Hungary for years. This band of clowns that run Hungary leaves the country in shame taking from Western Europe and then turning around to time and time again kick in the face the people who have been helping Hungarians to live a better life..
It is disheartening to observe that the Hungarians seem ready to surrender their sovereignty to the EU, which, in my view, has significantly harmed Hungary. The dramatic transformation in Hungary since its EU membership has been profoundly upsetting. I’m left wondering if, in 25 years, there will still be Hungarians in Hungary.
Heidi, without the EU Hungary would be bankrupt and in more dire poverty than it is now. There is simply no capacity , industrially, economically , geographically , even psychologically or otherwise to be self sufficient. There is no national economy to draw from. No big multinational companies that compete or feed the people here. Compare this to other ex eastern bloc countries that have thrived and dramatically increased living standards since joining the EU and ask yourself why Hungary is near the bottom of PPP and highest in the corruption index.
The EU is an easy scapegoat and has been used relentlessly as such to keep a few oligarchs in power. It is the only lifeline Hungary has at the moment, even though it is a begrudging one. The country certainly has done a good job of scaring off foreign investors and those who would otherwise start business here largely due to the intensive corruption found within the ranks of the government. … Might be better to deal with the corruption first before talking catchphrases about ‘sovereignty’, as if this is a real issue… Especially as Hungary just struck a deal to produce Chinese propaganda within the country, that will air here , and allow Chinese gendarmes to patrol your streets… +1 for sovereignty.
My gf is a very successful businesswoman in Hungary and we both aim to leave the country soon and reopen our businesses outside, not because of issues with ‘sovereign govt’ but because of Orban , the nasty rhetoric and dark vibes and fear mongering coming relentlessly from the govt, the insane inflation which is largely due to the price fixing schemes implemented by Orban, so now our groceries are cheaper in Austria- and the corruption that is stealing from her business. None of this is the fault of the EU. I don’t know, but to me, she might be a person the country would want to retain. But it’s not happening. The next wave of people leaving before Hungary gets a chance to exit and continue to hurt itself is happening now.
I guess it is up to people to decide. I’m sure many in the EU would be happy for Hungary to leave because it’s a weak link and has not provided a big benefit back to the zone, and it increasingly works to contradict fundamental democratic values , freedom of the press, transparency in govt – but good luck to you.
