“A shaken public trust must be restored through persistent, consistent, highly professional and humble efforts,” Márta Görög, the incoming Tisza government’s justice minister candidate, said at her confirmation hearing in parliament’s judicial and constitutional committee on Tuesday.
New electoral system to be made
“We must build a system in which an independent judiciary and zero tolerance for corruption are a tangible reality in everyday life,” she said at the hearing.
Concerning the most important tasks for her ministry, Görög said they would reinforce the independence of courts and prosecutor’s offices, improve working conditions in the sector, simplify procedures, reduce excessive procedural fees, review relevant laws, amend the electoral system, change the system of liquidations, reduce the range of cases in which a public notary is required, resolve the situation of forex debtors, make the necessary preparations for Hungary to join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, and “redirect Hungary back to the mainstream of European culture.”
Hungary’s new constitution on the horizon
“We must build a state, whose every measure proves that abilities and performance are appreciated, in which the force of the law ensures protection and equal standards for all; where justice is not a privilege for a minority but the sacred and inviolable minimum for our social coexistence,” Görög said.
She went on to say that preparations would begin for a constitution-making process aimed at unifying the nation. “Constitutional stability is the guarantee of our future,” she declared. She added that, in order to establish a more democratic and stable constitutional order, a new constitution would be drafted on the basis of broad consensus.
According to Márta Görög, a legal framework must be created that ensures the integrity of public life and the depoliticised functioning of state institutions, the ministerial nominee stressed. She indicated that the Ministry of Justice intends to play a role in strengthening the anti-corruption institutional system, and that abuses will be thoroughly investigated.
Ms Görög further stated that all decisions would be taken within the framework of the rule of law and along clear constitutional guarantees.
