Lando Norris received the prestigious Herend porcelain winner’s trophy from Prime Minister Péter Magyar after claiming victory at the 41st Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on Sunday.

The McLaren driver finished ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli in front of a record crowd at the Hungarian circuit. As part of the traditional podium ceremony, Magyar also presented Norris with the winner’s medal.

Following the race, the prime minister shared photographs with all three podium finishers on Facebook.

“Incredible excitement, a fantastic race and a record number of spectators,” Magyar wrote. “Congratulations to all the drivers and to the thousands of our fellow Hungarians who helped organise the event.”

Awarding trophies at Formula 1 races by local political leaders is a long-established tradition. Previous Hungarian Grands Prix have featured senior government officials presenting the trophies, and this year Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai also took part in the podium ceremony alongside the prime minister.

Norris avoids repeat of 2023 trophy mishap

Norris handled the famous Herend porcelain trophy with extra care this year, avoiding a repeat of the memorable 2023 podium incident when Max Verstappen accidentally smashed his Herend trophy during the celebrations.

Hungary aims to secure Formula 1 beyond 2032

Before the race, Magyar held talks at the Hungaroring with Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. Following the meeting, the prime minister said negotiations would continue over extending Hungary’s place on the Formula 1 calendar after the current agreement expires in 2032.

“Our goal is to ensure that the Hungaroring continues to host Formula 1 under the best possible conditions,” Magyar said, adding that the government remains committed to maintaining the race in Hungary for years to come.

The Hungarian Grand Prix, first held in 1986, was the first Formula 1 race staged behind the Iron Curtain and remains one of the championship’s most historic venues.
