MAP: These are the most dangerous settlements in Hungary
Hungary is not generally a place where you should fear for your life (or your belongings). However, there are certainly some parts of it that are more dangerous than others. In this article, we will show you which settlements you should be more cautious when visiting or living in.
Budapest sees the most crimes against property
Budapest is the settlement where most robberies and thefts happen in the country, Pénzcentrum reports. According to the latest statistics from the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), the capital was by far the city with the highest number of crimes against property last year. On Pénzcentrum’s maps below, you can see which regions have seen the most robberies and thefts per 100,000 inhabitants since February last year.
Number of robberies per 100,000 inhabitants in each county:
The lowest number of robberies per 100,000 inhabitants was in Békés and Vas counties: 3 each.
Number of thefts per 100,000 inhabitants in each county:
The map of theft shows in general which regions property crime is most prevalent. The capital city has the highest number of these crimes per 100,000 people surveyed, with 339. Similar figures were reported only in Heves County, where 250 cases of this type of misappropriation were reported per 100,000 inhabitants.
It is interesting to note that the third most “infected” county in terms of such crimes is not the other counties of the North-East, but Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, with 198 cases per person, Pénzcentrum adds.
Scary figures from the capital city
According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), in general, a lot of crime is committed in Budapest compared to other territorial units of the country.
In the third quarter of 2022 (the latest period for which public data is currently available), 40,349 crimes were committed in the country, of which 10,735 occurred in the capital. That means that the city accounts for 26.61 percent of all crimes. By contrast, in 2022, only 17.62 percent of the country’s population of 9,689,010, precisely 1,706,851 people, lived in the capital.
It is therefore clear that the capital city has a “superiority” in terms of the total registered crime rates, which far exceeds the one justified by the population, Pénzcentrum concludes.
