Mongolia could help with EU-Russia cooperation, says Szijjarto in Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar, January 26 (MTI) – Mongolia could help the European Union develop “pragmatic cooperation” with Russia, Peter Szijjarto, Hungary’s foreign minister, said after talks with his Mongolian counterpart Lundeg Purevsuren in Ulaanbaatar on Tuesday.
During the talks focussing on international political affairs, Szijjarto stressed the EU’s interest in pragmatic cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
Obsessed with their conflict, Europe and Russia have already been left behind in the global economic competition. Should the situation remain unchanged, they will suffer serious losses even in the long term, he said.
The idea of establishing a free-trade zone stretching “from Lisbon to Vladivostok” has never been so important as it is today, Szijjarto said. As the United States, China and the Arab nations have become very active in the world economy, Europe and Russia should in any case “join forces”. However, in view of the current global political environment, namely the Ukrainian crisis, developing such cooperation is not a simple task, he said.
Szijjarto noted that Mongolia had concluded a partnership agreement with the European Union. Further, it was holding talks on a similar agreement with the EEU and will host the Asia-Europe Summit Meeting (ASEM) in July.
Szijjarto asked his counterpart that Mongolia should act as mediator between the EU and the EEU and pave the way for a breakthrough in Europe-Russia relations during the summit.
