New data based on nearly 200 Hungary-related moving quotes suggests people moving to Hungary tend to relocate much larger households than those leaving the country, while Hungarian routes are generally cheaper than the European average.
Moving to Hungary can be significantly cheaper than relocating to Spain from the same European countries, while people moving into Hungary also tend to bring substantially larger household loads, according to new international moving data covering January to September 2026.
The figures come from Finnish international moving company Flyto Relocation, which analysed 7,754 quoted moves across 1,211 international routes. The company says its dataset includes 197 Hungary-related quotes, covering 48 routes and 29 partner countries. All prices cited are median quoted prices excluding VAT.
The data shows that 108 of the Hungary-related quotes were for moves into Hungary, compared with 90 for moves out of the country.
People moving to Hungary bring much larger households
One of the clearest differences is the amount of belongings being moved. The median inbound load to Hungary was 16.75 cubic metres, more than twice the 7.5 cubic metres recorded for outbound moves.
According to Flyto Relocation, a 17 m³ load would typically correspond to a furnished one- to two-bedroom home, while 7.5 m³ is closer to a studio-sized move or a car full of boxes.
The company says the figures suggest that moves into Hungary more often involve people settling into the country with an entire household, while those leaving Hungary tend to move smaller quantities of belongings, potentially reflecting individuals relocating for work.
The largest number of inbound quotes came from the Netherlands and Belgium, with 18 quotes each, followed by Germany with nine, and Greece and Spain with eight each.
For outbound moves, Spain was the most common destination, with 13 quotes, followed by the Netherlands with 10 and Germany with seven. France and Italy each accounted for six quotes.

Moving to Hungary can be cheaper than Spain
The data also shows a notable difference when comparing Hungary and Spain as destinations.
For a 20–30 m³ household move, the median quoted price from the Netherlands to Hungary was €4,831, compared with €5,690 for a move from the Netherlands to Spain.
For Belgium, the corresponding figures were €3,998 to Hungary and €5,632 to Spain. From Germany, a 20–30 m³ move to Hungary had a median quoted price of €3,406, compared with €5,797 for Spain.
That means the median quoted price for these Hungarian routes was roughly 15% lower from the Netherlands, 29% lower from Belgium and 41% lower from Germany than the comparable Spanish routes.
Hungarian routes also come in below the European average
The company’s broader European data indicates that Hungarian routes can also be cheaper than the European average for comparable move sizes and distances.
For moves of 20–30 m³ travelling 800–1,500 km, the median quoted price on Hungarian routes was €3,754, compared with €4,566 across Europe – around 18% lower.
For smaller moves of 10–20 m³ over the same distance, the median was €2,888 in the Hungary data, compared with €3,297 across Europe, or about 12% less.
However, Flyto Relocation notes that these comparisons are based on relatively small samples of 14 and 17 quotes respectively, meaning they should be treated as indicative rather than representative of the entire moving market.

A typical European move costs thousands of euros
Across the company’s full European dataset, a typical mid-range move of 20–30 m³ over 1,500–2,500 km had a median quoted price of €6,279, excluding VAT. For a smaller 10–20 m³ move travelling less than 800 km, the median was €2,394.
The company also warns that simply dividing the total price by the volume of belongings can give a misleading impression of moving costs.
A 3 m³ move costs around 12 times more per cubic metre than a 50 m³ household move, according to the index. This reflects the fact that fixed costs such as collection, transport arrangements and handling do not increase proportionally with the amount being moved.
Hungarians book moves about two months in advance
The Hungary data suggests that people planning international moves generally give themselves around two months to prepare. The median booking lead time for Hungary-related moves was 58 days, almost identical to the European-wide figure of 57 days.
July to October were the busiest months in the Hungary dataset, together accounting for around 70% of quotes. Budapest featured in roughly one in three Hungary-related quotes, followed by Debrecen and Szeged.
The most common Hungary-related routes in the dataset included the Netherlands to Hungary, with a median quoted price of €4,831 for a 21 m³ move, based on 18 quotes. The median for Belgium to Hungary was €3,998 for 20.5 m³, also based on 18 quotes.
For moves in the opposite direction, Hungary to Spain had a median quoted price of €4,398 for 12 m³, based on 13 quotes, while Hungary to the Netherlands stood at €3,021 for 5 m³, based on 10 quotes.
The figures are based on quoted prices rather than final paid prices, and the Hungary sample represents one company’s customer enquiries rather than official migration data.
