Munich Airport strike cancels flights, including Thursday Budapest routes
A two-day strike at Munich Airport is set to cause significant disruption, with the vast majority of flights cancelled. The Verdi union’s strike, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, includes participation from passenger security staff and employees of numerous ground handling companies.
The airport has urged passengers to check the status of their flights with their respective airlines and advised against travelling to the airport if their flight has been cancelled, AIRportal.hu writes.
Lufthansa has already cancelled its three scheduled flights between Budapest and Munich for Thursday (LH 1676, 1678, 1682 and their return counterparts), and a similar situation is expected on Friday.
“The trade union Ver.di has called on employees of several companies at Munich Airport to go on a two-day strike from 12 a.m. on Thursday, February 27 to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025. “Airlines have currently cancelled around 80% of their flights. Further cancellations cannot be excluded. A considerable impact on transport operations is to be expected. Passengers are therefore strongly advised to check the current flight status with their airline before travelling to the airport,” the website of Munich Airport warns.
The union is demanding wage increases and improved working conditions across multiple sectors, but an agreement with employers has not yet been reached. Similar work stoppages occurred on Monday at Düsseldorf and Cologne airports.
In 2024, Munich Airport, which serves 89 airlines, was the 11th busiest airport in Europe and the second busiest in Germany, Turizmus.com writes.
