Need to tackle Western Balkans migration route clear for EU, says official
Budapest (MTI) – Thanks to the government’s diplomatic efforts in recent weeks, everyone in Europe understands that it is necessary to deal with the migration route in the Western Balkans, the state secretary for EU affairs at the prime minister’s office said on Friday.
Szabolcs Takacs said after attending an informal meeting of the European Union’s General Affairs Council in Luxembourg that it was held on the occasion of Luxembourg taking over the EU’s rotating presidency on July 1 and the participants overviewed the tasks for the next six months.
Migration was a priority issue at the meeting and the participants, including ministers from the 28 EU members and from candidate states, confirmed plans to hold a conference on the Western Balkans migration route in Budapest this autumn, he said.
All countries affected by the Western Balkans migration route were represented at the meeting and they stressed that the challenges could only be handled if they join forces and cooperate, Takacs said.
