Péter Szijjártó: Bravo, Andrej Babiš

“Bravo, Andrej Babiš,” wrote Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Saturday on his social media page, after Babiš’s party secured victory in the Czech elections. He added: “Bravo, ANO and Motoristé! Another patriotic government in Central Europe! The V4 will soon be revived!”

Andrej Babiš aims to form a single-party government

Opposition leader Andrej Babiš, who won the elections in the Czech Republic, announced at his first press conference after the results were published that his goal is to form a single-party government. He intends to negotiate support with the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement as well as with the Motoristé party.

The leader of ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) ruled out any talks with the current governing parties, which he accused of having ruined the Czech Republic and of failing to deliver on their election promises. “We have always kept our promises, and it will be the same this time. Our goal is for the Czech Republic to be the best place to live in Europe,” he declared.

Babiš confirmed that he wishes to return as prime minister and expressed confidence that the government formation process would proceed without major difficulties. He said the government would provide a public report on its work every six months.

Answering a question, he also stated that “at the first meeting of our government, we will reject the migration pact.” The opposition leader described ANO’s election result as a “historic success,” calling it “the absolute peak” of his political career. At the press conference, Babiš stressed that the election victory was “the result of teamwork” and thanked voters for their support.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala, speaking at his own press conference, acknowledged the defeat of the governing side and congratulated Andrej Babiš on his victory. Fiala remarked that in these elections “extreme and populist forces have won.” “In a democracy, the results of elections must be accepted, and we have now done so,” he told journalists.

With 99% of voting districts counted, ANO was leading on 34.7% and Spolu in second on 23.2%, according to Reuters.
