The European Union would benefit from Serbia’s EU accession, but Brussels is hindering this process, while Ukraine, which “runs a corruption machine at the highest state level”, would only bring danger to the bloc, but they still want to admit the country as soon as possible, Péter Szijjártó, the foreign minister, said in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Following talks with his Serbian counterpart Marko Duric, Szijjártó called for Serbia to become a member of the EU as soon as possible, arguing that the bloc, including Hungary, would benefit from it, his ministry said in a statement.

“Here we have Serbia, which brings potential, growth and development, but Brussels doesn’t want to take it, while we also have Ukraine, which would only bring danger to the EU, and they want to push it in,” he said.

“I believe that it completely discredits the European enlargement policy that while here is Serbia, a country whose accession would clearly benefit the European Union with its economic growth and good performance, a significant number of member states are blocking progress in Serbia’s accession process,” he said.
